If WI results in a national movement, the frame must be: "Stop The Republican ASSAULT On America!"
Edited on Sun Mar-13-11 08:35 PM by RBInMaine
If you are familiar with message framing, it is about using language to create clear images that evoke accompanying emotional responses in order to effectively convey the message and define the issue. Right wingers are good at it. "Tax Relief" for example frames taxes as painful burdens that must be "relieved."

I hope that the WI events and similar events happening in other states will prompt a true Dem/Progressive national movement defined as "The Republican ASSAULT on America." It is clear, pointed, and conveys very vividly that what Republicans are doing is dangerous and damaging and immoral. It conveys images of Republicans attacking workers rights, attacking schoolkids, attacking headstart for little kids, attacking the elerly, attacking college kids, attacking the sick, attacking veterans, attacking police officers and firefighters, attacking the middle class, attacking the environment, indeed, attacking our AMERICAN VALUES in favor of the rich and powerful. It shows them to be the greedy, heartless, and reckless rotten things they are. **And very importantly, it conveys that people should vote for Dems because Dems will protect the people from Republican aggression.
It needs to be said over and over and over and over again. REPUBLICANS ARE ASSAULTING AMERICA. Progressives need to learn how to form and control a message effectively. This is the chance.

Are there other ideas on effective frames that MUST be used to define the movement?

4. Good, but too soft. It doesn't frame what the R's are doing vividly enough. They must be framed as
"damagers" and "attackers."

10. I disagree with what you are trying to do. Most will agree that there is an assult on our freedoms
or the American Dream but might disagree on whether the Republicans are to blame.

15. I wish also. But we must be practical*.
Edited on Sun Mar-13-11 09:40 PM by rhett o rick
Pres Obama needs the middle 60% of the voters to win in 2012. Maybe if this movement encompasses enough of this group he will have to go along. He isnt going to pay any attention to the left. He needs the middle. So the left can help the middle see the light, maybe there is some hope.

On edit: I forgot to explain the *. I have to admit I am usually not practical. I do try to follow my principles. Which doesnt include voting for the lesser of evils.

16. The problem with this is
if you look at the protesters in Wisconsin, many of them are life-long Republicans, and on many other issues will probably still be Republicans. Now, many I've spoken to have seen the light, but calling this as republican assault would turn others away from it. Yes, it's only Republicans that are making these attacks on unions, but framing it that way will alienate many who might otherwise be on our side.

I'd suggest going with what was mentioned above, with something like 'Save The American Dream'. Everyone knows what the American Dream is, and hearing that it's in danger will wake people up.

21. As someone who knows just a little bit about marketing,
that's a little too long. If you want people to remember it, it has to be short and snappy - or, if it's long, then it has to be something that sticks in the memory. I'm no expert on marketing, though - it's more of a hobby for me to study. "Stop the Assault On The American Dream" could work, but I feel it's a bit too long. Also, it's acronym is STOATAD, unless you get rid of the small words, in which case the acronym is "SAAD", neither of which work for me.

28. DEFEND THE AMERICAN TRADITION
Edited on Mon Mar-14-11 01:51 PM by whosinpower
The birth of unions, collective bargaining, fighting back against the robber barons and workers rights are all an important part of the history of America and american traditions.

Tradition is a good solid word, with allot of grounding in today's uncertain world. It is a bridge that includes both republican, independant and democrat voters. It is a conservative word that is used to DEFINE how government and unions have, in the past, worked towards progressive ideals such as the 40 hour work week, a retirement age, labour standards, payroll benefits, and old age security.

Defending that is exactly what the new civil rights movement will be doing. The people are not asking for something that was never there - it was, and is being stripped away, for the benefit of a few corporate monied elite.
