1. Just heard that on Cenk U.
Can you imagine the delight of the protesters? They're been raised from the almost dead. Just hope it doesn't end up in all out war!

3. Rice told reporters direct attacks on pro-Qadhai forces bearing down on Genghazi may now commence
U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice told reporters that such a move could involve direct attacks on pro-Qadhafi forces now bearing down on the rebel stronghold of Benghazi in eastern Libya.

30. Actually, the UN resolution does include the use of ground forces.
It states that there can not be an occupation force, but there's a nuanced difference between active ground combat forces and occupational forces.

5. The main reason I'm happy about this is because Saif Qadhafi was so arrogant in saying the regime
would be in control of the whole country in a few hours (something similar). And I'm VERY happy that this is NOT a U.S. operation alone.

7. My only concern
is the oddity whereby I doubt you would find any links which demonstrate the degree to which the rebels are in any way representative of the total Libyan population. That is not say the rebels should be treated in the way they are by the regime.

I have a feeling there is something behind the scenes here of which we are not fully aware.

11. Well...
Hillary Clinton met with the opposition yesterday. I'm sure there IS something behind the scenes that we don't know about.

13. What cracks me up
is that the "opposition" , unless they do represent the majority of the population , may not necessarily be voted for in the event of elections.

In other words they're just a temporary convenience for outsiders like her to talk to.

16. Caveat - I do not know how much to trust this - but Deputy Secretary of Stete Burns spoke of
knowing many of the rebel leaders and many on their council. This was at today's SFRC hearing. This was in response to many Senators questioning if we knew who they are and what their goals are.

8. I'm simultaneously very happy and very upset
the last $#@!ing thing I want us to be involved in is ANOTHER war.

At the same time, I do not want Qaddafi to remain in power.

Edited on Thu Mar-17-11 06:41 PM by Cali_Democrat
The people at the security council including the US, UK and France never even sat down and negotiated and now they wanna let the bombs fly because of the oil that's at stake.

Sickening.

We need to kind a peaceful method of dealing with him. How can we arrive at a peaceful solution without even negotiating directly with him?

Don't get me wrong. My optimism for this is high. Just want it over fast with minimal casualties. "0" Americans would be great. I feel like I just ran into a truck.

24. That's a disturbingly vague resolution.
Does this mean that they'd be OK with peacekeepers?

The ONLY way I'd be all right with intervention in Libya would be with a STRONG coalition of international partners, and even then I'd have some serious misgivings.
