Bob Parsons, CEO of Godaddy.com, kills elephant in Zimbabwe. Peta responds.

The head of the mega internet hosting company shot and killed an elephant on his recent trip to Zimbabwe. He claims the elephants were terrorizing a local village and therefore had to be killed. Parsons was so proud of himself, he even made a video and posted it to his blog. It includes a picture of him with the corpse of the elephant and everything.

PETA wasted no time in firing off a letter. They wrote:

“I am writing to present you with PETA’s first-ever scummiest CEO of the year award (your certificate is on the way). You deserve the award for your egregious disregard for the life of the elephant you shot and killed for your personal enjoyment. Such behavior only shows a poverty of understanding and a deep insecurity, perhaps in your own masculinity. Nonlethal methods are available to protect crops from elephants left hungry because of their disappearing habitat.”

Parsons defended his actions with the following statement:

“I stand by my decision to help African villagers. I believe elephant management is beneficial. I have the support of the people who really matter in this situation, the families of Zimbabwe— people who need help to survive. I have the support of tribal leaders and the government.”

I saw the video. I tweeted it. Right now, it seems the server has gone down. This was my short url: http://snurl.com/27q1iz in case it becomes available. I watched it from Mashable. This was a sport killing and then to top it all off, he allowed villagers to pillage the carcass. Hundreds of people were filmed tearing apart the dead elephant.

I am not an anti hunter. This was sport kill. and then the remains were tossed off to the "poor villagers" this was disgusting.

To which Parsons reportedly replied, "You are completely misinformed. Elephants in Africa, especially in the Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa corridor exist in tremendous numbers. They are in absolutely no danger of becoming extinct. The bigger problem is that there is way too many of them."

(In case you wondered, on its Red List of Threatened Species, the International Union for Conservation of Nature lists African elephants as "Vulnerable," a designation between "Near Threatened" and "Endangered." It also says, "the status of African elephants varies considerably across the species' range." There's more information here.)

Should you choose to watch the video, you will see that Parsons declares (and shows) that the elephant was butchered the next day by local people who were very hungry.
