Obama's support among blacks and Hispanics slips to new lows

Obama's support among blacks slips unexpectedly, Hispanics too
April 7, 2011 | 3:38 am

Barack Obama rode to a comfortable presidential election win in 2008 on the electoral wings of a coalition based on liberal whites, independents and blacks, especially blacks.

However, this morning comes the most troubling political news for Obama's four-day-old reelection campaign: His job approval among blacks is sliding.

<snip>

Once monolithic, blacks' support for the first African American president is still....
....immense. But for unclear reasons it's declined about 7% from well above 90% to 85% in March. That's a new low since Obama's inauguration 26 months ago.

Equally ominous for Obama in 2012, his approval among Hispanics, the nation's fastest-growing demographic, has also fallen to again tie his term low of 54%. That's a drop of 11 points from its early high of 65%.

58. That is the big difference between 2008 and 2012
In 2008 Democrats voted FOR Obama. In 2012 they will be voting AGAINST the republicans rather than for Obama. Lesser of two evils.

4. The questions is not the percentage of the Black and Hispanic vote Obama will get ...
but the number of Blacks and Hispanics that show up at the polls.

Many Republicans were so disgusted at the behavior of Bush the Junior and Republicans in Congress that they didn't vote in the 2008 election. Consequently not only did Obama get elected (he would have beat McCain no matter what) but that both houses of Congress ended up under Democratic control.

In the midterms many Democrats stayed home but many Republicans showed up and voted not only for Republicans but for members of the Tea Party.

I believe that Obama will get reelected if the economy is well on its way to recovery. If gasoline rises to more than five dollars a gallon, the recovery will be stymied and if the Republicans can manage to find a reasonably acceptable candidate with a solid background and experience at leadership they may win. So far they haven't come up with one.

Of course it may be possible that the Tea Party will desert the Republican Party and run their own candidate. That would insure an Obama win and help[ Democrats retake full control of the Congress.

2. Maybe they feel they didn't get what they voted for
They wouldn't be the only groups that felt that way.

Wall Street fraudsters and supporters of massive defense spending on the other hand, got exactly what they voted for.

Just from a different guy.

5. You know I really hate this kind of shit.
Blacks always vote democratic in genrally the same percentage as we voted for Obama. Yet we have to constantly hear this implication that we voted for him because he's black. No, we voted for him because he's a democrat. The fact that he's black made it more exciting. What's the point of this crap? Oh, I guess we're gonna go run and vote republican because we're disappointed?

Black people have always been fucking disappointed after elections. That's a fucking fact of life for us every since we've been allowed to vote. We've always had to pick the "lesser of two evils."

That's why this place is so surreal. I never realized it until lately, but I guess white folks just aren't used to feeling like they have to pick the "lesser of two evils", what with all the crying and moaning going on.

Can't for the life of me see why people feel the need to just keep piling on and piling on. Poll this morning, poll this afternoon, poll tonight.

Are you routing for his numbers to keep falling? What is it? Do you get joy from this? Did you get excited when you found this poll? What the fuck is the point?

And blacks vote for white candidates regularly, even when they are running against black candidates. Yet when we vote for a black candidate over a white candidate, we are subjected to the insulting and condescending accusation that we are voting based on race, as if we aren't capable of discernment or political savvy.

I am so tired of seeing this crap. Some people around here love to post anything that makes it look like Black folks are turning against President Obama. Cornell West is the new hero around here because he always has something negative to say about the president. What these same folks don't seem to realize is that this piling on pisses us off because it's the same kind of foolishness we have to deal with on our jobs, at school, etc. There are folks here who clearly want to see the president fail-- much like the people over at the RW sites.

Approval rating among blacks is at a new all time low and approval among Hispanics is at an all time low according to Gallup. Hispanic approval is at an all time low and not a new all time low.

Any other questions?

9. When you capitulate to Republicans on issue after issue...
Your support among the people who put you in office will dry up and motivation will be diminished. This could potentially be bad news for 2012.

The solution now is for Obama to move firmly to the left and give a middle finger the the Republicans.

Americans out of work and feeling hopelessly. When the economy falters, sure there is some backlash, but come Election Day that'll change. Will there be some disenchanted black voters who stay home. Probably. Will the vast majority of black Americans vote for Obama? ABSOLUTELY!!

So, you can stop celebrating now. It ain't happening. We are still down for Obama.

21. Basically alot of black people are liberals and Obama has disappointed them. Hispanics could be
disappointed because he really hasn't tackled immigration reform. The only segment of the coalition he's really improved things for is the LBGT community. It also doesn't help that the minority employment rate was already high before the great recession and Obama hasn't addressed that yet. As a matter of fact he's pretty much told blacks that they need to pull themselves up by their own boot straps in so many words. Not to mention the war on drugs is still going on.

So if there are Blacks and Hispanics who don't like him, they will NEVER not vote for him---at least the majority. So do I waste my time on this shit?! NO. Why are we like this? I think everybody here knows Republicans hate blacks and most hate Hispanics.

The way dems could help blacks and hispanics is the same way they could help the country as a whole. But they mainly didn't do much. No national health care program means the working class are tied to low paying jobs for health coverage or else they are forced to try and buy expensive often unaffordable individual policies.

A crummy economy means the bottom of the heap get hired last, fired first. or else if young enough they can always join the military in order to get their educations funded if they survive.

See, the more things change the more they remain the same.

What on earth took so long? We've been needing everybody beating down on this Black man
forever...and these folks wait a whole fucking 2.4 years to tell White Man Gallup that
they are easing off their support? Damn.....Them are some stubborn folks!
I mean, this is the group that is only important when they don't support this President,
otherwise, they are only supporting him because he's Black. So Yeah! Three cheers.

Hey, I know.....Let's keep up the 24/7 bashing of the President from every direction, and hopefully, eventually, everyone can get on board, so that he can get his ass kicked to the curb and out of the White House ASAP! Yeah! :bounce:

Oh....BTW....I found 10,000 Wisconsin votes in my garbage can, and I'm way more trustworthy than some Polling corporation!

:patriot:

51. Gotta love it, Frenchie.
The only Black Americans whose opinions matter are those who don't happen to support Obama.
As for those who do..."Well they just support him 'cause he's black, see?"
"New lows"...aka a different of 3 percentage points.

66. You nailed it!
It's sickening, isn't it? They really do think we're too stupid to see what's going on here.

52. His "new low" among Hispanics is not a "new low" at all,
and his "new low" among African Americans is only a 3 percentage point-different from December 2010.

54. AA's and latinos will vote Democratic. No chance they will vote for Repugs.
Approval, as defined by the polling organizations, is not a determinant of voting behavior.

Comparative evaluation (vs. the GOP candidate) determines voting behavior.

Obama will continue to attract the classic Democratic groups of voters in 2012.

LOL. And add the error ratio? This is truly a joke. LOL! You'll post anything that may be construed as a negative for Obama.
This is beyond a stretch.

72. Sounds like statistical noise.
Blacks, as a sub-group about 12% of the population would have much a much higher margin of error than the overall sample.

The figures about Hispanics have the same flaws, but it is well known that many are swing voters, no surprise there.
