I'm actually for the shut down. Obama should make it clear that defunding planned parenthood is not even an option.

And I'm sick of losing, caving, grovelling for half a loaf if we're lucky.

But the shutdown is certifiable. No way.

8. so you want them to cut funding to things like planned parenthood? I can't go with that.
The repubs are holding this country hostage again. It's disgusting.

Of course, I don't want him to cave. But I don't want the Government shut down either.

4. why would anyone want to shut the government down - cut war spending instead
billions still being poured into Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq, military bases overseas. These are just oil and poppy wars.

5. The GOP got what they wanted with the tax cuts a few months ago
I expect they will get what they want again with this latest threat.

7. And they got it by holding up unemployment benefits ...
...Obama claimed he could not let innocent people get hurt by him not reaching that deal. Is anyone suprised that the Republicans have decided to use the exact same tactic again? It worked so well last time...

12. Obama caved on tax cuts to get START and DADT passed
Since the Republican congress has made it clear that they aren't passing anything he wants for the next two years, he has no reason not to stand his ground and let the budget fight drag out.

6. I sure as hell am
I hope the fact that Obama has to rally the troops to support his reelection will give him some spine.

11. Cave on what?
I expect there to be some cuts in government services. That sucks, of course, but it's pretty much a given, unfortunately. However, I can't see them caving on defunding ACA and defunding Title X funding (aka Planned Parenthood) seems like it would be too politically dangerous (not to mention, just stupid) to support. Anything else might be up for grabs, however, including NPR (though even that might be a "bridge too far" for most Dems). I think that what Obama and the Dems should do is simply demand a "clean bill" free of these odious riders and force the Republicans to hold separate votes if they're so damned important to them (and most of them will almost certainly go down in flames if voted on separately or at least they'll be killed in the Senate or on the President's desk- which is why they HAVE to have them in the budget bill and get the President and Dems to cave on the entire budget as is).
