But pay close attention to the partisan breakdown. Most Democrats opposed the deal (81 to 108) while most Republicans supported it (179 to 59).

That's good news for Boehner, right? Well, not really. The day after the deal was struck, GOP leaders said they expected some defections on this, but thought the total would go no higher than 40, and the leadership was prepared to "work strenuously to keep the number below 30."

The final tally of GOP defections was 59.

Also note, this means divisions among Republicans were so significant, the budget deal would have died, rather easily, were it not for House Democrats who once again saved Boehner.

I'm sure the Speaker is pleased the deal went through, but he can't be pleased with the margin -- a fourth of Boehner's own caucus rejected the budget deal he personally negotiated.

There are 16 freshmen Republicans in the Tea Party Caucus.

22 Repug in the Tea Party Caucus voted NO. Of those.......
16 were freshmen........of those 16 only half (8) are in the TP Caucus.

So of the 59 NO votes:
16 Freshmen
43 Veterans

Which includes
22 Tea Party Caucus members (8 Freshmen 14 Veterans)

-------------81% of the Republican Freshmen voted for the bill.

8. it's always a dicey game reading into roll calls

a lot depends on the whip counts and commitments. a republican might commit to voting for it *IF* that vote is needed for passage.
then, once it becomes clear that plenty enough democrats are voting for it and the bill will pass comfortably, that frees them up to vote against it and pander to their favorite constituencies instead.

you get loyalty points by working with the party leadership and committing to vote as they wish IF YOUR VOTE IS NECESSARY, and you get rewarded by, among other ways, being freed to vote your own way IF YOUR VOTE IS NOT NECESSARY.

so just because they actually voted against it doesn't mean that they WOULD have voted against it had their votes been necessary for passage.


remember that it's not a secret ballot. voting behavior in open ballots can be very different from voting behavior in secret ballots.

Democrats largely withheld their votes as they waited for the roll call to tick past the 218 "yeahs". While aides to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) watched the leader board from the floor, Dems forced Republican swing-votes to put themselves on the record before they knew whether the bill would pass or not. Once passage was assured, votes flooded in, including from 15 additional Republicans, previously on the fence, who opposed the bill from the right.

13. Wow heis leadership is anemic compared with his predecessors. Something tells me he won't have that

speaker job too much longer if he has to keep winning votes like this. If I didn't know he was a republican and this was a split on the right I could swear he was a democrat governing like this.
