Most effective Obama protests have happened at fundraisers |
|
specifically at fundraisers where Nancy Pelosi is present.
About a year ago, Obama got heckled by a gay rights activist while Nancy Pelosi was standing beside him. He did not like that at all.
Then it happened again, also at a Pelosi fundraiser. Obama turned to Nancy, said "this is the same guy as before."
Now it has happened again, with the Manning proteters, again at a fundraiser with Pelosi. Obama reportedly said to her this time, "did you plan this?"

4. Heckling is when you shout 'you suck' at a comic |
|
Not when you engage in a planned political action during a speech by an elected official. Sorry but the word is not appropriate at all. The President, who likes to praise Ronald Reagan, might do well to look up the history of AIDS Activism, and learn all about why the kid gloves and soft voices got put aside for more uncompromising forms of political speech. Ron was a calloused, ignorant wall of apathy when he held that office, and his silence demanded ever increasing acts of political theater just to get the damn government to notice the health crisis of our generation. Reagan's bigoted foot dragging cost precious lives and years of research. So no President should expect to be met with anything less than the best we have until there is a cure. Until there is no need anymore. Silence = Death

12. It is a good way of indicating that serious supporters would appreciate a certain action. |

The world isn't divided up into 'HATE OBAMA GRRRR' people and 'OBAMA IS ALWAYS RIGHT<3<3<3' camps with no ground in between.
There are shades of gray.

8. Effective in what way? |
|
it resulted in social change? New political social policies were enacted? Or are you merely talking about being annoying? How is annoying, effective?

14. first, effective at getting through Obama's bubble |
|
yes, getting the president annoyed is an accomplishment. Making it that much harder for him to ignore the issue.
And then, the possibility of social change. The gay rights protesters were protesting Obama's lack of action at that point on DADT.

15. not sure I agree that annoying anyone esp obama, makes him more likely to address an issue |
|
"Making it that much harder for him to ignore the issue.". I just don't agree that this is in any way considered 'effective'.
'Effective' to would have a proven outcome. All there is here is an assumption of a personality trait and conjecture of any potential influence on that personality.

17. In terms of getting any policy change...it was not effective. |
|
In what way did shoe throwing guy get Bush to change anything public policy-wise?
Showing disgust towards Bush and his policies...I guess the guy passed along his message of disrespect and disdain.
Is that what you are getting at? The effect you are going for is showing public disdain towards Obama? Still not sure what that is supposed to accomplish. There's nothing "effective" going on in that exchange.
Why you care that Obama notices disdain directed towards him if it doesn't accomplish a change in political direction or policy.

19. speaking truth to power |
|
the goal of most protesting (the protests that aren't intended to drive people from office) isn't to directly change policy. Those ladies don't have the power to set policy regarding Bradley Manning. That's good, imo. I don't think he should be "freed" as they called for. I didn't agree with their position, but I LOVED the fact that they were able to get in there and say their piece to his face, and that they got a reaction out of him. I just hope a video comes out.
And by the way, where did you get the part about these ladies' "disdain" for Obama? All I saw from them is their stated support for him. I think that's what the problem is. You're concerned about Obama, these protesters are concerned about Manning.

20. from generalities to specifics, from Bush to Obama, from shoe throwing to Manning |
|
this moving goal post is silly.
The white suited singer certainly has the right to be disrespectful in the manner and arena they chose to send their message. This is showing disdain imho. I just don't think it was effective....apparently you do. But rather that explain where you see the effective results of their actions, you keep changing the target. I compltely understand why you need to do this. I'm pretty sure others can see the reasons as well.
