low wage workers to Obama: please "friend" us, too

In a jab at Obama's visit with top Facebook executives, rally organizers fashioned a backdrop of a giant Facebook page designed as a "friend request" to the president.

"Low-income families need help," read the text on top of the page.

Below were Facebook-style panels saying, "Obama likes (General Electric CEO) Jeff Immelt, (Goldman Sachs Chairman) Lloyd Blankfein and (Citigroup CEO) Vikrim Pandit."

A separate Facebook-style panel read, "People you need to know: The jobless, the elderly."

Fred Lopez of San Jose described himself as a "working parent" who is grateful for tutoring help his kids get at their public school, where he also volunteers.

"Mr. President, while you raise big money for your campaign, we are the families affected by these (federal budget) cuts. Please friend us too."

1. Points well made - that the prez "likes" Immelt and Blankfein as much as he does...

2. Obama made a deal to extend benefits to the jobless ... no?
And what horrors (other than call the GOP plan to kill Social Security and Medicare, RADICAL) has he visited on the elderly?

Folks might want to find the actual enemy, and then focus their attacks in that direction.

3. Precisely... the whole extension of the tax cuts for another two years was
a deal struck to keep food on the table with a jobless recovery in process. The corporations have been holding back from putting up new jobs.. anything to hurt Obama and the Democrats.. and the people at the bottom are left to try and eat air.. something had to be done.. the Republicans are all about trying to extend an underclass of poor people.

I do not get it either..

7. Oh bullshit. If the unemployed were important then their benefits would have been indexed to
the unemployment rate in the first place or failing that, serious extensions instead of a few weeks at a time to use as a political cudgel in a cynical game destined to be lost against the much more practiced and soulless Republicans.

The real enemy owns the game. The players come and go.

9. Unless they've been unemployed more than 99 weeks
then they're out of luck. And whatever happened to the talk about extending the COBRA subsidy? Anyone who lost their job since last summer gets no help with COBRA so, odds are, they have joined the ranks of the uninsured.

10. He gutted medicare advantage
which I use and saves me a lot of money.Plus it has many healthy benefits, such as free membership to gyms...etc etc.The Obamacare guts 500 billion dollars out of Medicare Advantage which specifically helps low income seniors. It was a sneaky slap in the face to low income seniors who do not have any real voice in the great government of ours.Such as GE and Citi Bank etc have.Obama is simply one of THEM.

4. Who will fund his reelection though, top executives or low wage workers?
I am pretty sure Obama knows which side the bread is buttered on.

5. Maybe there's a reason they're low-wage earners.
Edited on Sun Apr-24-11 10:21 AM by Phx_Dem
Do they not know they've gotten two tax cuts, extension of unemployment benefits (for those who are unemployed), and guaranteed health insurance with subsidies from Obama?

Do they think he can magically give them a raise, or a job?

6. You do know that taxes went up on "low-wage earners"?
All of your points are half measures. A bone so to speak, with all the meat very, very carefully removed. None of them solve any problems. Perhaps he could work on a jobs program or work on raising wages. No magic needed, just leadership.
