LANSING -- Lt. Gov. John Cherry's weak showing in public opinion polls in the race for governor in 2010 may be because many voters don't know who he is, and those who do don't like him very well, a poll released Wednesday shows.
EPIC-MRA pollster Bernie Porn said more than a third of voters (39%) don't recognize Cherry's name. Three top Republican rivals all have better recognition: Attorney General Mike Cox is known to all but 16% of voters, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard to all but 29% and U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra to all but 35%.
The poll was released as Cherry acknowledged a shake-up in his campaign staff that he said would help him to focus more on issues.
The poll of 600 active Michigan voters did find Cherry was far more recognizable than other Democrats who may run for governor: state Reps. Andy Dillon of Redford Township and Alma Wheeler Smith of Salem Township and former state Rep. John Freeman of Madison Heights.
Cherry has trailed by double-digits in head-to-head matchups with Cox and by high single digits against Hoekstra and Bouchard in several polls in recent months.
