Progressive Caucus DEFENDS President Obama on his Social Security Stance
Edited on Fri Jul-08-11 12:55 PM by UrbScotty
Oh hey wait a minute. How can this be? The Progressive Caucus has come out with some words regarding the President’s positions and words on Social Security, and they weren’t YOU SUCK.

Progressive Democrats called on Thursday for the president to keep Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid out of a final debt limit deal, but defended him for putting a restructuring of those programs on the table, so long as doing so did not impact beneficiaries.

Snip

We feel the discussions have been skewed up to this point," said Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), co-chair of the caucus, who also said he would not support a final deal if it involves entitlement cuts and does not include revenue-raisers. "It's incumbent upon the president to put what I believe are the real priorities on the table for deficit reduction."

But Grijalva and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), a vice chair of the caucus, defended the president for signaling he would be willing to take a look at changes to the programs, arguing there are ways to restructure entitlement spending to save money without hurting beneficiaries.

1. Does this mean the Progressive Caucus aren't really Democrats?
I mean, how can they see anything reasonable in anything the President REITERATED from the 2011 SOTU?

No one who supports the President on this is a real Democrat.

7. Thank you for posting this.
I am still waiting for FACTS. Haven't seen any facts yet.

And I am all for any restructuring that saves the programs, doesn't hurt beneficiaries, and keeps the programs strong for the future.

Why don't we have better information on 'what's on the table'?????

and whittle away some fat WITHOUT affecting recipients, I think that's okay. It should have been done anyway.

ETA: Jarod Bernstein was on w/Ezra Klein and he said there is some stuff that could be shaved while still ensuring the same amount of coverage/benefits, but he said Medicare was another story -- that he's concerned about what they may do to that.

I'm going to see if CNN has a vid up and will post it here if they do -- he had some good insight.

13. A hint: a defense does not begin by saying 'as long as you do
not do what we are worried about.' They are calling upon the President to be specific and to make no cuts or adjustments that impact beneficiaries, and Obama has not yet said the things they say it is incumbent upon him to say.
If this is a defense, it is one with all manner of asterisks and riders as well as much urging to do the right thing. An interesting form of defense, that.

Look into the president's stance on SS. Nothing about cutting benefits at all.

26. There are ways but not many as one might think and few, if any the TeaPubliKlans are interested in.
They are whistling past the graveyard because in the same blurb they are mounting their "defense" (which amounts to there are possible ways to restructure that won't impact benefits) they had to call on the President to keep the programs out of the deal.

Yeah, spirited defense there. Please don't and saying something is possible.

You act like they are saying the cuts aren't going to happen. Spin, spin, spin. If the fucker wasn't seriously trying to cut he wouldn't have his ass in the middle of the cut mix or putting bullshit on tables, or appointing piece of shit like Bowles and Simpson to a damn thing and you know it.

There is a new trial balloon every month. It is bullshit and foolish to pretend nothing is cooking.

Trotting out this weak shit in a sad attempt to settle the resistance some is all it is because the content is please don't and reaching for theoretical possibilities.
