Concerning possible cuts in SS
During the 8 yr period of Monkeyboys presidency, the repugs had all the opportunity they needed to cut or hurt SS. They didn't do it. Why? Not because they cared about the millions that it would adversely effect. No, they knew it was political suicide...and more than anything else in this world, they love their jobs in congress, and the power and prestige those jobs bring.
Now, the Democratic administration is declaring that cuts to SS are "on the table".
The repugs are euphoric. Now, they will get to GUT a program that they really don't like AND they get to blame it on the other side. What could be better? They can watch with those SMUG grins on their faces while the Democratic party commits suicide.
BTW, whats the best number to call this administration and voice our opinion about this?

3. don't you remember the trial balloons they floated in 2005?
Edited on Thu Jul-07-11 02:50 PM by rurallib
town hall after town hall they got the shit kicked out of them.
Even my 'mr. moderate republican' Jim leach got cornered in a small town auditorium and couldn't get out for about 3 hours for an hour meeting.
ETA - remember 'personal accounts' and 'private accounts' and all their other words?
I think Bushy called it his greatest defeat.

8. Cuts in benefits are NOT on the table.
I have seen absolutely nothing saying that cuts to benefits are on the table. Nothing at all. SS reforms are on the table, to be sure, but they're to cut waste, fraud, and red tape. Not benefits. I've seen nothing to suggest otherwise.

I'll be with you if it's shown that benefit cuts are on the table. But, as of now, I see no proof at all that they are.

12. Donut Hole was created by a benefit *increase*, though.
I swear, if Obama moved the retirement age down to birth, people would scream that pre-natal benefits were "cut".

14. Ive personally seen dozens of people I know, including my own
mother that have been devastated by those "reforms" and the donut hole. There was NOTHING good that came from that reform that I have seen.

13. Reports say the proposal is to "adjust" inflation calcuations for Social Security
Over the past two decades or so, Corporate America has effectively lowered all of our wages by failing to give us raises that keep up with inflation. Government is playing the same game with social security benefits by saying that inflation is less than it really is. Now they want to put that in overdrive.

Social Security became part of the private discussions between President Barack Obama and Republican House Speaker John Boehner on coming up with "something big" to reduce deficits by $2 trillion to $4 trillion over the next decade. One option includes a new inflation measure for Social Security that could produce savings close to $200 billion through a combination of reduced benefits and higher taxes, White House officials said Thursday.
...
The proposal would represent a reversal for Obama. In contrast to his pledge to target tax increases at the wealthy, high-income families would largely be spared from tax increases that would result from changing the way inflation is measured. And until now, the administration has been adamant that Social Security does not add to the deficit and should not be a part of deficit reduction talks.

Adopting a new inflation measure would allow policymakers to gradually cut benefits and increase taxes in a way that might not be readily apparent to most Americans. The inflation measure under consideration is called the Chained Consumer Price Index. On average, the measure shows a lower level of inflation than the more widely used CPI.
