Millionaire tax resolution clears hurdle
Millionaire tax resolution clears hurdle
By Josiah Ryan - 07/07/11 12:46 PM ET

The Senate voted Thursday to allow Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-Nev.) millionaire tax resolution to come to the floor for debate.

The Senate has slated another vote for Monday on whether to end debate and move the measure for a final vote on passage.

Reid’s measure calls for higher taxes on people earning $1 million or more in a year.

Republicans helped push the resolution over an initial 60-vote hurdle on Thursday in a 74-22 vote, but GOP support for the resolution is far from certain in Monday's vote which requires the same threshold.

If the resolution were to clear Monday's vote, it would face one final vote that would require a simple majority.

1. Obama should go on television ASAP
And talk about the need to pass the bill.

He's got the biggest bully pulpit in Washington DC.

Get it done!

5. OK, I'll be the first to say this is stupid
Why pile up more tax code? Just raise the rate on the top brackets and deny deductions that help millionaires avoid taxes.

8. Republicans pass (& break) LAWS....Harry Reid, OTOH, (tries to) pass a symbolic RESOLUTION.
Edited on Thu Jul-07-11 09:25 PM by Faryn Balyncd

Is there any indication this is anything but a move to try to pacify the Democratic base, to convince Democrats to shut up and take it?

What substantive concession does Reid intend to give away in order to pass this totally symbolic resolution, which, if passed, will not raise taxes on anyone?

This is how the leader of the Senate MAJORITY acts?????????

(Or is this appropriate for an alternate leader of a minority party of a mock Congress at Boy's State?)

:hi:

(Thanks for posting. It's probably the closest thing to a positive development this week.)
