Debt Limit Truth or Dare: Why Obama is Turning Up the Heat on Boehner
Debt Limit Truth or Dare: Why Obama is Turning Up the Heat on Boehner
Monday, July 11, 2011 | Posted by Deaniac83

Conventional wisdom is wrong, again: It's President Obama and the Democrats turning up the heat to reduce the federal deficit by $4 Trillion over the next 10 years, while the Republicans are turning tail as Speaker Boehner is telling people a $2 to $2.4 trillion deal is "more realistic." But President Obama and his team are not ready to let go just yet. Secretary Geithner went on Meet the Press this morning and basically called the orange man a cut-and-runner (transcript):

And, and, you know, just one thing to Republicans, we know this is very hard to do, but they should not walk away now from trying to do something good for the country. This is very important for the country now. For the economy to be growing long-term, restore confidence that Washington can actually do things and solve some problems, you need both sides to come together now.

Pitch. Perfect.

President Obama has cranked up the pressure himself, boldly challenging Speaker Boehner and asking him, in essence, to go big or go home. And he's threatening the Republican lawmakers with the worst possible ailment for them, working.

President Barack Obama told top lawmakers on Sunday to be prepared to meet every day this week to hash out a deal to cut the federal budget and raise the debt limit, a Democratic source with knowledge of the talks said.

The Democratic official said that Obama pressed Republicans at a White House meeting Sunday evening to aim for a broad, $4 trillion deficit-reduction package rather than a more modest one.

"If not now, when?" the president asked them when some said it was not the right time to try to craft a far-reaching deal, the official said.

5. +1
This was absolutely a ploy, just take a look at the response on DU, let alone across the blogs. This trial balloon worked exactly as expected. SS was never on the table, just get the rabble roused ( boy, did that work).

3. This could help destroy RW memes:

1. Security & defense - A Democratic President got Bin Laden, has killed more 'terrorists' than Bush...kept us safer longer etc.

2. "Tax & spend liberals" - Dems lowered taxes across the board, trying to cut spending MORE than the Republicans.

3. Jobs & Economy - OK Republicans have swept in on JOB, JOBS, JOBS! - But zero job creation. What have they accomplished - what legislature have they brought forth? Time to put it on them. They are in charge now.

Need to pound these messages home. What else they got? Socially conservative issues? Whatever.

8. 65 Years Of Republican FAILURE to Create Jobs -graphs and stats-
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_mHSyEv8vBt4/S6Zvl-nui8I/AAAAAAAAACQ/3j0wUSj78mk/s640/Job+growth+graph.jpg?

The record shows two unmistakable patterns:
1).Every time a Republican succeeds a Democrat in the White House, the job creation rate plummets.
2).Every time a Democrat succeeds a Republican in the White House, the job growth rate soars. Every time! No exceptions!

Considering the steady growth in population of the United States during this time frame the job creation rate should steadily increase each month (currently it must grow by 128,000 per month to keep up with population growth). This trend only manifests itself when examining Democratic administrations:

Listed below is the average job growth increase for all terms served:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mHSyEv8vBt4/S6Z6xo0qSnI/AAAAAAAAACY/p8SkoEnN5dw/s640/job+creation+by+president.jpg?

Two things grow when Republican economic principles are at work: unemployment and the National Debt.

4. This was what I was hoping for.
Obama and his team are so far above any Republican I can think of that it has to stress their brains to keep up with him. The Dems are so quick to jump Obama for everything he does that I think he truly enjoys these plays.

We should all post that photo of Obama saying, "Relax...I've got it covered!" or whatever the caption is. He's one cool Prez! Love him!

10. There will be a whine line up change any second now...
There will be no crow eating... just a pinch hitter whine change.

I'm sure Obama has been irresponsible about something... move up the next whine! Sorta like the Faux Gnus game book really.

11. I'm not interested in legitimizing right wing bullshit to play some silly game
to highlight TeaPubliKlan intransigence to the blind and/or stupid that haven't heard them proudly proclaiming such endlessly.

There is no real advantage to this happy horseshit and yes the agenda is still to cut these programs by hook or crook. The game is getting them to a level that most will tolerate, to use them to draw fire from other stupid and counter-productive cuts, and to move toward the corporate line be it in a giant leap or in baby steps.

13. My illustration is that I'm not moving anywhere or looking for a shift
My assessment has not changed.

So, you're right that I have no contrite retraction because there is no reason for such, I just heard the President still talking about trimming benefits and moving to the oppositions position.

The Catfood Commission is being used as a framing device, sadly the most left border of the frame.

19. They want to hate Obama... and they want him to fail...
At any cost. They would be happy standing in a bread and soup line as long as they have a voice to blame Obama. They want the full faith and credit of the United States of American to fail... they want interest rates to skyrocket... they want to never be able to buy a home, afford the one they own, or even be able to rent a home in a decent neighborhood. They want to never be able to buy a car again because the interest rate would be so prohibitive. So what? Obama would fail! Yippee!

20. If that is the way I felt then I would have skipped the ramen inducing donations, the phone banking,
the talking to people one on one, and those couple of votes.

I want Obama to avoid failure but he is bound and determined to crash and burn taking poor and working folks with him knowing that he will rise like a phoenix from those ashes to rounds of golf with Poppy, Bubba, Jeb, and Junie.

26. No DUer 'hates' the President, JuniperLea
Do you realise we all want to see him succeed in furthering GOOD THINGS, achieving progress? It worries most of us sick that we are all losing ground when the Democratic president compromises with the loony rightwing Republicans.

It's not about 'Team Obama'. He's supposed to be helping us, not us helping him. But if the President would fight for US, we'd do anything to help him. The most disappointed people may be the people like me who were earliest onboard with Candidate obama.

No, we didn't expect miracles, nor do we want the President to act like a dictator.

18. It's funny that DU shows the evidence that Obama's strategy
is effective, in terms of appealing to the middle but not really giving up that much.

I sure hope that is the result - with the psychos on the other side he has to really run circles right now

25. Obama
He Is playing them all for fools and they are too stupid to know It.Obama has offered them plenty of cuts they should be jumping at
but are not because of one little problem.Obama wants to raise taxes on the rich.Their blind Instance on no tax hikes for Rich
Is making them like look children and Obama the adult.

Forget about Obama as one term Present.Bohener could be one term Speaker.Republicans are doing nothing to help Economy.Even when
Obama offers them solutions which could hurt using Ryan Medicare killing plan against Republicans they still are being children.Obama
Is calling their bluff.

And let's remember another fact that Is coming to light.Obama said back In December after he made deal to temporally extend the Bush tax Cuts for keeping unemployment and Stimulus Tax Credits that this was only temporary. We know he Is serious about raising revenues on the rich.
