Obama: time to "eat our peas"
I bet David Plouffe wrote that line. It's politically very effective. It makes Obama look very good, politically speaking. Independent voters, swing states, all that.

The president said today he would not accept a smaller, short-term deal. "We might as well do it now," he said. "Pull off the band aid. Eat our peas."

1. He is the adult in the room. We are in crisis financially.
Yes, we all know what got us their, but be that as it may, the problem needs to be fixed. Obstinence on either side will not do anything to address the problem.

6. The deficit is not a crisis, if that's what you mean.
Deficit spending is exactly what we need the federal government to do in this prolonged recession.

The debt ceiling is an artificial crisis and needs to be resolved the same way it has been in the past -- by raising it.

33. We should do those things, but not in order to create a budget surplus, not now anyway.
We should end the Bush tax cuts and the wars and put that money into stimulus spending, deficit spending.

Later, when the economy is recovered and we have a prolonged period of growth - only then - we should adjust revenues and spending to create a surplus.

Deficit spending during a recession. Surplus during a boom.

34. ha ha....
I prefer broccoli too.

Bush Sr. hated broccoli. My oldest son made a poster when Barbara Bush came to campaign in a nearby town back in the early 90's saying "NO NEW BROCCOLI!!" (field trip for the NH primary).

"I do not like broccoli. And I haven't liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I'm President of the United States and I'm not going to eat any more broccoli."
George H. W. Bush

that comment got a lot of press around here.

Sounds like the work of Mark Penn. I'm surprised Plouffe, who was involved in the campaign, is taking this turn. Actually, I'm not.

Why is this immediately interpreted as talking down to Dems?

Given the MSM's M.O. of twisting everything the President says, he needs to cut through their filter and beyond them to whomever's listening.

19. Obama has been told he's "the only adult in the room" for too long
It has gone to his head. I honestly think his ego is so out of control now that he want's to come up with something that everybody hates, just so he can claim the old adage "if everybody hates it, it must be good".

He's going to have a long time to think about his mistakes if he doesn't figure out that Americans do not like being talked down to, and don't like it when their leader insists that they suffer. Especially since Americans can easily see who isn't being made to suffer.

Specifically, he stole it from Bob (B-1 Bob) Dornan (R-Meglomania) who said that line while criticizing Mike Dukakis's 'bookkeeper' image. Dornan said that Dukakis looked to Americans like an "eat your peas," kind of guy.

That seemed unlikely. Are you mischaracterizing O'Donnell's non-purist position on last December's neogotiations which resulted in a UI extension for the needy long-term unemployed?

Now that I have the link, where's the quote? That's awfully HUGE typeface, BTW.
