It looks like the GOP swerved. The GOP will likely bitch and moan and agree to raise the debt ceiling.

Good. And to the extent that Obama may have caused them to swerve, I salute him.

Nevertheless, the fat lady hasn't sung yet.

Rather than his position being a bluff, or 3D chess move or whatever, I do worry that he really meant it, in terms of negotiating some kind of "grand bargain" or whatever. He seems to have a real appetite for cutting spending and reining in government and "entitlements."

So this little drama/crisis is likely not over, and we may still some big package of cuts and we may still be force fed a diet of "peas."

Maybe not. But it's still too early for skeptics to be eating crow just yet.

1. What DEM leaders have stepped forward with a "Peas Plan"
A Majority of Americans want the Tax Loopholes closed - why haven any DEMs backed up Obama and put a solid plan in motion

2. They could probably be closed, but at what cost?
Edited on Wed Jul-13-11 12:38 AM by David Gill
Would you want to pay $5 for every $1 of revenue raised from closing tax loopholes? Because that might be the cost of getting bill like that through congress

3. MAJORITY of Americans support Closing the Tax Loopholes
Some of which would increase Jobs in America

Raise the Cap on Social Security Tax and use the surplus to buy treasury Bonds ONLY - don't let RATpubliCONs use it as a "Hidden Tax"

4. How?
You need an act of Congress to change the Social Security tax cap.

11. With a "Grand Bargin"
if Americans knew the exact details of what is being proposed you would certainly here a lot more public outcry

The American Public "Gets It" - we know what we want and we will vote for what we want and we don't want Social Security and Medicaid Cuts.

7. The Fat Lady, aka the GOP's Wall Street masters, have sung.
McConnell seemed close to tears yesterday. What a dressing down he must have received.

8. The fact is spending has to be cut and taxes have to go up ....
Deficit spending cannot go on forever.

The questions remain how to do it most fairly for the poor and the middle class. The rich have made out like bandits.

I trust Obama and any other Democrat to handle this problem far more than any Republican.

10. I agree with most of that.....But I would probably define "more" differently
Having seen variations of this movie too many times, I don't have much faith that the end product will be very much more thsn more conservatism camafloged as "centrist."
