As promised, POTUS is taking his case to "the American people". Media blitz starts today.
STRAIGHT TO THE PEOPLE: The day after telling House Majority Leader Eric Cantor he would take his case on the deficit “to the American people,” President Obama will sit down with three local TV reporters to do just that. In guidance to reporters, the White House said Obama will talk about “the economy and the importance of finding a balanced approach to deficit reduction.”

The interviews will be shown starting at 5 p.m., the White House said — just after the fifth round of negotiations with congressional leaders starts in the Cabinet Room.

1. That's good news, but I want Obama on my TV, speaking directly to the American people.
Keep the media 'reporters' out of it.

4. This is actually good. Because
they'll show the interviews several times over a couple of days. Local news stations ware still excited at getting the interview. And here will be no msm talking head idiot to spin the answers. We has an interview here not long ago and that's how it worked.

15. WTF? This way he can target the points of importance for many people with unfiltered questions.
Nothing seems to be enough. First you want Obama to explain what's going on. He's about too---now the specialized ways he must respond to your questions is a problem. Would you like him to wear a tutu and have a dancing monkey on his shoulder? This is not to say you're statement has no grounds. But I'm glad he's going to talk to us and see how this discussion is going to go before I complain on the how he's talking---I'm more interested in the substance of the post.

25. I'm glad he's going to talk to us too.
When I wrote to the WH yesterday, I suggested getting on TV, I was thinking fireside chat sort of thing. Maybe a lot of others suggested face time for the American people and that's why he's doig this. It's a good move.

27. Or maybe he always knew he had to speak to the American people.
He was doing it all last week---albeit through cable. However, I also noticed he was getting frustrated with the same old same old. He knew he wasn't coming to the American people with any news and he was also trying to this would force the hand of the Republicans to make a move. He looked as though he was hoping the last 4-5 days of talks would lead to somewhere that he can give to the American people. However, that seems to be falling through and he's now going to probably address the people with the impasse he's facing in the government.

Many people were expecting him to cave, as though he's done it in the past. Many people still call him a corporatist. I think Obama does have a sincere love for America and the American people. I also think he's on top of keeping the American people informed. While the MSM spends time to shut him out. C-Span does carry a lot of what Obama does---again he has spoken to the American people. What I like particularly about this move, if this is going to be a reality. Is that he's going to the locals.

That won't be like him speaking to the American people....unless it's local news stations---unless they transmit it to other people. Most of the time the big cable news stations get the news and a lot of people tune them out. However, he'll reach a broader audience with local news. Even Fox viewers do get caught up on local news and that's a smart move. Smart, old-fashioned, but a good deal. Secondly I prefer local over cable---because it's really cable news that has manipulating and abusing the electorate with their blather.

30. The Corporate Media has to air it. DU fails to realize that Obama hasn't stop talking.
The problem all along as been the fact that his speeches, his chats, his travels to various cities and towns are NEVER covered by the Corporate Media.

And yet, it seems that after every meeting with the Republicans, the first thing they do is run out to the cameras to grandstand. And the Corporate Media loves it!

It's been this way since before the elections. The weekend after the Republicans got their asses kicked up and down the street, they were EVERYWHERE on the Sunday morning talk shows. It was as if THEY won the presidency and Congress.

The Corporate Media *DOES NOT* air the Democratic Party side of things. There is no long a Fairness Doctrine that would hold the M$M accountable and keep it honest!

This is the TRUTH!!!

20. I wonder if that means he doesn't want the Blitzers and
other fake journalists to get this 'scoop'...

maybe I'm not understanding this properly tho. Local reporters sounds like people we wouldn't necessarily know nationally. and that, if so, if a great thing.

slap those Blitzer, Crowley assholes and shut them out.

6. Why just 3 local stations? Does that mean 'DC Stations'?
Local to what? 3 locals does not really take it to the American people so much as it takes it to 3 local markets. Why not address the nation directly?

7. He will be addressing the nation via these "local" markets.
We know that's how communication works nowadays. There is no more "local" news. It's all global. His message will get out there. Also, recall, he did a presser with the White House correspondents just last week.

8. And since most people get their news from local outlets, not cable, this can be very effective
Edited on Thu Jul-14-11 10:35 AM by Empowerer
And I'm sure the White House has carefully selected media markets that can impact targeted Members who can make a difference. He doesn't need to do any kind of nationwide address to make this point - he's framed his narrative beautifully for the national press and they're are beginning to tell the story within his framework. This is all about targeting and pressure points now.

We political junkies tend to think that cable news is the end-all-and-be-all, but most folks couldn't care less what Matthews or Scarborough or Cooper or Maddow say or think about anything . . .

11. Agreed! I've been saying that for years now. Only us political junkies watch cable political shows
Give local interviews and the big networks will show and re-show what their 'affiliate' station got on film. THEN you get to the majority of people who don't already have an opinion.

Good job Obama.

16. Ugh----the local stations do filter out to other stations.
And you have no clue if this is the starting point to serious moves. He will be addressing the nation. Do you want a 40 minute interview or a 15 minute time slot with the other 15 minutes given to Pundits moaning and groaning.

13. No one ever seems happy with Obama.
Now they don't like him talking to local newspapers. He's starting off with 3 and we have no clue how far and wide he will go. But the three he's sitting with seems not enough here---based on the statements on this thread already.

I personally think Obama has been good about what he's done in the past and I'm looking forward to what these local papers have to say. Obviously based on everything that's happened he knows what he's doing.

26. Why would you say something like that?
People need to get over themselves big time. They are part of the citizenry. You can't fuckin' ostracize them. They get lied too on a regular basis, and maybe some of them like being lied too---but that's all the more reason Obama needs to get in their face and try to make them see the reality of what's going on. They might not have voted for him, will never vote for him, but as the American President and they are part of the American population----he has to address them. Please get over yourself---your extremely partisan way of thinking is very limiting.

Offering up billions in spending cuts in the interest of deficit reduction looks reasonable. Offering up SS cuts in the interest of deficit reduction is NOT reasonable.
