Clearly the health insurance didn't cover her medical costs:

"leaving her “to pay only the deductible and any uncovered expenses, which, she said, came to several hundred dollars a month.”

and then the other insurance company tried to stiff her on her disability insurance claiming her cancer was a pre-existing condition.

She was facing big bills with no way to pay them except for the money that the disability policy was supposed to provide. Why didn't the original health insurance policy cover all her costs? IMO, she was whip-sawed between two insurance companies at a time when she needed all her energy to fight her illness.
