SPT: Intensity fuels Wasserman Schultz in political pursuits
Intensity fuels Wasserman Schultz in political pursuits

“You’ll never amount to anything in Florida politics,” Mark Delegal, a member of the University of Florida Student Senate, warned in the late 1980s.

The petite girl from Long Island with the big, curly hair was forming her own political group, The Beach Party, and taking on Blue Key, a hallowed leadership society that has been springboard for some of Florida’s best-known politicians including U.S. Sens. Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson, former Gov. Bob Graham and House Speaker Dean Cannon.

“They chose the people who were in the right fraternity and kissed the most tuchus. That just wasn’t me," Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz recalled.

"Of course I was proven totally wrong," laughed Delegal, a Blue Key who is now a Tallahassee lobbyist. "Debbie never applied. She stuck to her principles."

Today, we take a look at Wasserman Schultz's fast political rise, culminating in her selection by President Obama to head the Democratic National Committee. Story here.

1. I came to really respect DWS during and after the 2008 primaries.
Although she was a staunch advocate for HClinton, she was careful not to be caustic and ugly like Geraldine Ferraro and Manny Davis. When the whole mess was over, she showed nothing but grace and endorsed the Democratic nominee without hesitation or equivocation. She is a Blue Dog (boo!) but she's tough and smart and IMO an excellent choice for DNC Chair as she has proved to be an effective counterpoint to RNC Chair Rinse Pubis (lol!) or whatever the hell his name is. I fully expect her to do a great job.
