It's a joke.

14. He truly is a joke. I don't pat Ed on the back when I hear he's said something supportive,
because all these former hardcore Repukes like Ed, Arianna & Cenk just don't impress me. How do you go from just this side of a teabagger to the left of Bernie Sanders, unless there's $$$ in it?

Randi Rhodes has always intimated that she had insider information that Ed took someone up on business proposal because he'd never break into the bigtime as a RW radio host as he sounds too much like Rush. They thought he could be huge if he tried to develop a liberal following, and so far it's paid off.
;)

12. The tea party have dug in their heels on this
and Obama is going to be forced to do the repsonsible thing. He won't get a big deal, maybe 1 trillion in cuts only. And he'll take it.

I say let a default happen. I'm ok with default here since the repubs will get the blame and they're being so unreasonable. Wall Street will give em hell if they let a default happen

13. What exactly is the
President supposedly going to "cave" on: the McConnell plan, the one that raises the debt ceiling now and punts on any discussion of revenue increases/spending cuts?

I mean, other than what the President wants, that's the only other plan on the table.

What is the likelihood that any deal reached is considered a "cave"?

17. Pretty simple:
A deal with spending cuts, and no revenue component would be considered a cave. A deal with cuts to the big 3 and no revenue component would be considered an abomination and grounds for staying home in november, in fact any cuts or modification of SS or medicare would as well.

18. Um.
"A deal with spending cuts, and no revenue component would be considered a cave."

Who proposed that? Can you provide a link to such a proposal?

Otherwise, the "cave" statement is based on an imaginary proposal, one that even Mitch McConnell hasn't proposed.

24. oh, sorry
the cave as I understood it was agreeing to spending cuts without revenue. Apparently the McConnel plan being negotiated between Reid and McConnel includes 1.5 trillion in spending cuts. Ed floated the possibility that there might be cuts to the big 3

19. Hes frustrated as I think we all are in this debate
Who could possibly have ever believed that SS and Medicare cuts would be negotiated at all? If I were told this a year ago I would have laughed and said that its crazy and yet here we are, seemingly debating on Republican turf not the validity of cuts but instead the size of them. We have seemingly ceded the argument over to the other side and it drives people like Ed nuts.

I guess we can see what happens the rest of this week-but I am also pessimistic.

42. Did you laugh in January
when it was an absolute certain that the president would announce major "slashes" to Social Security during the State of the Union speech? There was a lot of ranting about that as well. It had no basis in reality, but that made no difference. Here we are again...a lot of speculation with no basis of fact. Heaven forbid we wait and see what the facts are. It didn't happen in January, but lets not let that stand in our way now.

33. The most likely scenario at the moment would be better described as a GOP "cave".
From CNN..

Because there is a growing consensus on Capitol Hill that the White House talks are unlikely to bear fruit, lawmakers in both parties are looking to a plan offered by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell as the most likely legislative solution to avoiding a default.

McConnell, R-Kentucky, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, are now considering adding to the measure in order to boost its chances of passing the GOP-controlled House and Democratic-led Senate.

As described by McConnell at a news conference last week, his legislation would authorize the president to request of Congress debt ceiling increases in three increments between now and the end of next year. The first would boost the debt limit by $700 billion and the next two by $900 billion each.

36. Apparently the cuts being discussed are ok with most Democrats..
"Democrats are privately very happy that McConnell offered his proposal, but they don't want to publicly embrace it right away for fear of turning off Republicans or otherwise jinxing the deal. They like the plan because it gets them out of the default mess; it avoids the deep spending cuts they feared would come from a grand deal with Republicans; and it avoids cuts to entitlements. It doesn't give them revenue increases that many Democrats were insisting on, but it appears they can live with that."

To me it still sounds more like a cave from the GOP than from the Dems.
