Americans, Including Republicans, Want Debt Compromise

But Americans also worry that such a plan might not include major spending cuts
by Frank Newport

PRINCETON, NJ -- Two-thirds of Americans would like government officials to agree to a compromise plan on the debt and budget deficit negotiations now underway. Fewer than 3 in 10 want lawmakers who share their views on the debt and budget deficit to hold out for their desired plan. A majority of Republicans, independents, and Democrats favor reaching a compromise.

These results, from a July 15-17 USA Today/Gallup poll, come as President Obama and congressional leaders continue to wrangle over a number of different types of agreements that could be reached in time to raise the debt ceiling before the Aug. 2 deadline.

Obama held two press conferences last week on this topic, and in each portrayed himself as willing to compromise, while arguing that not all Republican leaders have reciprocated. Rank-and-file Republicans, however, believe compromise is in order, with 57% saying leaders should agree to a compromise plan, even if it's a plan the respondent disagrees with. Independents and Democrats are somewhat more likely to support a compromise.

2. Option 3: Don't fucking do anything except raise the ceiling.
NO ONE has to "compromise" on ANYTHING.

Just pass/sign the fucking bill and then talk about all this next budget.

That's how it's always been done.

This whole ceiling thing was only done to add another bill to give politicians cover. Half of them can vote for the budget and then half against the ceiling, so everyone can say they "voted against big government".

Now, that's what I call a winning strategy.

3. The majority always wants compromise. It's the extremes on both sides
that loathe compromise.

5. It's incredible how such a complex topic gets boiled down to a few ke words and soundbytes

How about a word cloud? "Compromise", "Spending", "Tax Cut". God, this is so typical of media drivel and a political culture based on polls.

Seriously, people have no idea what it is the government spends much of the money on. At least people are finally starting to understand how stupid the teabaggers are (well some anyways).

Where do we we apply those spending cuts? Do we cut Pentagon spending? Sounds good, but the Pentagon is a massive organization. Are people OK with cutting funding on certain weapons programs? What if those programs provide jobs in their district?

The GOP always crows on about "entitlements". So you want your dad or grandma or whomever to take a cut in the check their getting? After paying into the system their whole life? What about Medicare? "Raise the Age!" you say? What if they're facing health conditions making it unaffordable to buy health insurance?

What else is there? Cut veterans' benefits including healthcare? You don't want to pay to pay the troops?

You don't want courts to function?

"Cut the EPA and other burdensome regulations!" Wow, you must be some sort of creature that doesn't breathe air or doesn't drink clean water. Impressive.

The rest of the federal funding as you go through the chart hardly adds up to make a dent.

The only two real solutions to get anywhere is cutting defense spending significantly and raising taxes. I didn't know a strong military means we need to be responsible for 40% of the worlds arm's spending. Why spend six times what China spends? Wouldn't we be fine if that were just three times or even twice what they spent? 4.3% of our GDP is spent on the military. We'd be fine bringing that down to 3 or even lower. Of course, this also means ending all three wars and cut military aid to countries like Pakistan and Israel.

And raise Goddamn taxes on those that can afford it.

7. NBC/WSJ poll: Americans want compromise on debtBy Mark Murray
NBC/WSJ poll: Americans want compromise on debtBy Mark Murray
Here's the story on the full NBC/WSJ poll:

As Democrats and Republicans wrestle over spending and deficits in advance of an Aug. 2 deadline to raise the debt ceiling, most Americans want their political leaders to compromise rather stand their ground, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

Strong majorities of Democrats and independents prefer that Democratic congressional leaders make compromises in this budget debate, while almost 70 percent of independents want Republican leaders to do the same. And nearly six in 10 favor President Barack Obama’s proposal to lower the federal deficit by $4 trillion over 10 years by cutting federal spending, raising tax revenue from the wealthy and reducing some Medicare spending.

By comparison, only about a third of respondents prefer the House Republican proposal to reduce the deficit by $2.5 trillion over 10 years through cutting spending alone and not raising additional revenues.

8. The Peoples Budget does that
Deficit reduction of $5.6 trillion
• Spending cuts of $1.7 trillion
• Revenue increase of $3.9 trillion
• Public investment $1.7 trillion

AND it preserves Social Security.

Seems strange that there appears a media blackout over this bill, even though it has gone through CBO testing and fared far better than the Ryan plan. Even if they do not agree with the bill - it should be brought forth to debate and discuss.
