Response from Nike regarding signing Michael Vick. |
|
A few weeks ago I sent a letter to Nike regarding the endorsement deal with Michael Vick. They responded today. The problem I have with the response is that they call his actions "a mistake." His actions were purposeful and violent. Not mistakes...
Here is my letter.
To Whom It May Concern: Michael Vick and his friends went around his neighborhood stealing his neighbors' pets. He would duct tape the mouths of these beloved pets and use them as bait to be brutally attacked with no way to defend themselves. Was he wearing Nikes when he committed these acts? This is one example of numerous heinous acts.
Michael Vick was barely punished for some of his crime by spending a few months in prison. He is brutal and violent and has not done enough to make amends for his violent, ugly, un-Nike like behavior.
How could you possibly think that Vick represents Nike? I will no longer be a Nike customer.
Here is their response:
Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us.
We have signed Michael Vick as a Nike athlete. Michael acknowledges his past mistakes. We do not condone those actions, but we support the positive changes he has made to better himself off the field.
If you are already aware of our statement, thank you for your comments. We share all feedback with our leadership team.
Thank you again for contacting Nike. Sincerely, Nike Consumer Services

For confirming my commitment to a non swoosh world!
It's past time to start writing letters and emails to all the major sports organizations who use Nike products and accept Nike sponsorship.
I won't buy Nike ever again.

7. Mistake? "Oops! I tortured and killed your beloved pet. My bad." |

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Vick's crime was so heinous he should never be accepted into polite society again and he sure as hell should not be rewarded for his celebrity. Screw Nike and the child labor they rode in on.

11. Michael Vick can be forgiven. |
|
But forgiveness does not mean he needs a multi million endorsement deal. Fuck Nike.

Great letter, Evergreen.
"Michael acknowledges his past mistakes."
Not only were his actions NOT mistakes, but "acknowledges" is very different from "has atoned for" or even "regrets."
