I though I voted for a Democrat for President |
|
in Nov 2008.
Now this guy is cutting Medicare and social security benefits? Why are all these fundamental changes to the safety net being rushed through? This guy campaigned on not touching social security or Medicare.
What the hell happened to the democratic party?

2. Quote the final plan which passed where "this guy is cutting Medicare and social security benefits". |
|
<< This guy campaigned on not touching social security or Medicare. >>
Quote? In this year's SOTU, President Obama said he wanted to cut Medicare and SS costs and fraud but not benefits.

Never did I think I'd see a democratic president using ss, Medicare, and peoples lives as a bargaining chip. I expect that from republicans. But not from a democrat. Especially when these programs have nothing to with with 2 wars, bush tax cuts, subsidies to oil companies etc that ran up the debt. They shouldn't even be part of the debate. FDR is rolling in his grave.

it's just about the main thrust against your OP:
look at the arguments:
1) it's not a threat until it's in big, bold print and passed/signed legislation 2) you're a hater anyway 3) you can't have ever liked Obama because you criticized him once in 2009 and once in 2010.

47. what you're saying is very simple --one couldn't have supported Obama in the past if... |
|
they ever criticized him in the past 2.5 years.
what you're saying is that if I vigorously supported him in 2008, but then criticized him in 2009 or 2010, that i'm just a hater.
what that means is you're calling hundreds of people here that.

who had raised my hopes for the USA, with his election and victory, I see Obama as someone who is willing to roll over for compromise that just doesn't exist with the Repubs....I really think he has had it with the babies in DC...and may not really care if he is re-elected.
I would love to see his progressive side....but progress has become a bad word in the US...as is the word accountability....IMHO
I have a young american brother and sister in the US, and I fear for their health and for their future....

Or Moderates. Then left leaning Republicans. Centrist Republicans. The "wing nuts". And the Tea Party.
Moderates do not believe in many of the things that Democrats do which leads to the passing of things like DOMA, DADT, NAFTA, and tampering with Social Security. Democrats do not do these things. Moderates do. It doesn't make them evil mind you. It is just a clearly different point of view.

and a "DLC New Democrat". One is a protector of the social safety net and an advocate for the people, while the other is simply a Republican with a "D" after their name at the ballot box.

37. I thought I supported one through the primaries and the election. |
|
We were mistaken.
But I keep trying to draw on historical perspective. Even after enacting Medicare and Medicaid and other Great Society initiatives (including the Older Americans Act), Democratic President LBJ betrayed us by escalating Vietnam into a major war. I very much felt the betrayal then, and I was happy that LBJ decided not to run for another term -- he didn't deserve to be reelected. Participating in the attack on SS and Medicare could produce the same result for Obama, although he WILL run in 2012. Or he might be reelected. In any case, he doesn't deserve to be; and it would be without my vote. That is, unless he flip flops again and stands behind SS and Medicare. But I don't expect that to happen.

41. I posted something similar last week in a fit of depression |
|
along the lines of "Why should I vote in 2012"
When I came to my senses I realize that there is no alternative at all. The likes of a tea party person coming to power is way way too dangerous a possibility. The 2009 health care law must be protected and given a chance to be fully implemented. If we don't vote Dem or stay home and a Rethug takes over-they may well be able to repeal the health law and undo a move towards giving the uninsured a chance. For me that's too important to ignore.

All while the Democrats had a majority in the House of Representatives THE WHOLE TIME.
If Obama cuts SS or Medicare it's because he wants to cut SS or Medicare. Doesn't have a damn thing to do with the debt ceiling. If it did he would get out there, along with his cabinet and scream bloody murder that the GOP was holding the Country hostage over this and blackmailing the Administration with total collapse of the economic system if they didn't do it. Wouldn't exactly be true but it would be what you go out and say if you want to get your way.

61. The Democratic Party has changed. |
|
Unfortunatly it is no longer the party of the middle class. It has become the party of Reagan. FDR and JFK are rolling over in their graves.

79. He doesn't want to slash SS and Medicare benefits. |
|
Granted, he does want to trim them. Raising the eligibility age for Medicare from 65 to 67, for example, is a trim, not a slash. He is on our side. He said that he would refuse to extend the Bush tax cuts for the rich. OK, I admit that he is also willing to provide more permanent tax cuts for the rich by lowering the top tax rate. But don't be too hard on him. If he doesn't make these concessions, then, um, er, something bad will happen.

89. That's not the plan. Guess you haven't heard. The COLA will be cut,... |
|
decreasing SS recipients benefits by as much as 10% gradually.
That's a lot of money to elderly people living on a shoestring. It hits our most vulnerable very hard. Very hard. And they're too old to do anything about it. Can't go out and get a job. Either unhealthy, or no one would hire them.
Medicare cuts...increase the cost of premiums, I think. I THINK those increases are based on income, which means it's a tax increase for the wealthy, but I'm not sure it turned out JUST being for the wealthy.
No two ways about it...serious cuts...on the table....being agreed to by Democrats. And Social Security having nothing to do with the deficit.
