Al Sharpton is a ratings hit - MSNBC considering making him permanent host at 6 p.m.
Edited on Wed Jul-20-11 06:35 PM by Empowerer
Apparently, I'm not the only one who's impressed with Rev. Al . . .

http://blogs.indiewire.com/shadowandact/archives/rev_al_might_be_getting_his_own_show_on_msnbc/

<snip>

Not only has MSNBC been impressed with his performance during his stint as a temporary host, they’ve been even more impressed with the ratings. The ratings for the show, since he’s been on, have come in a strong second after Fox News, regularly beating CNN and Headline News.

As a result, sources are reporting that MSNBC is seriously thinking about giving Sharpton his own permanent show on the network, in the 6PM slot, and moving Ugyer into some other capacity on the network.

1. They'll lose this viewer
I don't like Sharpton's delivery. He's OK as a guest but I'm not impressed with him as a host.

3. They'll probably lose lots of viewers
But gain even more . . . I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't watch MSNBC who would definitely start watching because of Rev. Al.

4. I wouldn't be surprised if this has been in the works for awhile
and comes as no surprise to Uygur. Looking at his ratings - as I did for the first time today - it's clear that he was tanking and I can't imagine MSNBC was pleased with his performance. It was probably only a matter of finding the right replacement.

8. Thanks . . .
It says that Uygur was offered another time slot but refused it. Interesting.

21. I agree
And I think the more people watch him, the more many will agree, as well.

It's interesting that he's being criticized for not being adept at reading a teleprompter. Anyone who has heard Rev. Al speak knows that he is a brilliant speaker. He speaks without notes or a script - often speaking about very complex issues, facts and concepts - something that very few in television or public life can do.

He can learn to read a teleprompter - it just takes practice. But the skills, talents, knowledge and abilities that he already has and can build upon in this new role will make him a very successful host, in my view.

22. YAY! 1 Less Progressive on TV -- DU is in Party Mode!
Let's be honest here...half of DU despises progressives that speak the entire truth which involves even calling out corrupt democrats.
So Cenk's exit is excitement to the ears of half the members here because they dont want to find out their party has corruption going on..they just want to hear republicans are evil and anything, ANYTHING democrats do is always good even if it is really bad. It's really quite sad and embarrassing.

27. Isn't it interesting that some folks think that people whose entire career is based on nothing but
talking have more "progressive" bona fides than someone who has spent most of his career actually fighting for something?

35. Occasionally, I listen to Al's radio show and he has been critical of President Obama....
But unlike many DUers, he doesn't think that the president loves Wall Street, hates poor people etc etc.
