When haggling with a used car salesman.... |
|
Edited on Fri Jul-22-11 09:18 AM by Sheepshank
...when making a sales pitch and making offers you hope the buyer can't refuse, when trying to entice borrowers and lenders for a new business venture. When a company is in trouble and negotiations are in process to avoid closure, when posturing and strategizing for military conflict of any type, how many publicize all of their possible moves and motives? How many lay all of the cards face up on the table?
To whine that there is not enough info handed out in these debt ceiling discussions, seems to play into the hand of the Republicans. THEY want to know all about the strategy in play.
Personally, I think it's good to tell the WH what you want, what Obama and the House should be considering etc. Make your voice heard. But to whine that there is not enough info during the discussions? Well I hope those little whine fests are not satisfied.

5. So you think Obama's "jorb" is that he should let the Reps know all the cards he holds? |
|
Because it's the best strategy during a negotiation? Your response is called a nonsequator. It really doesn't have anything to do with how negotations are conducted irl.

3. Implying that people's lives and livelihoods are chips to be wagered in a poker game. |

Implying the current "crisis" is analogous to a poker game. Implying legislation written in secret is a good thing.
Implications.

4. if that was the only analogy used. |

If I had implied that there were no other analogies where secrecy is paramount to part of the negotiations, I could understand your piss and moan.
I think most would have understood that on the spectrum of negotiations from poker game to strategizing war, there is a level of secrecy. That you choose to sidestep that thought is nitpicking clearly for the sake of nitpicking.
Some people just have the need to complain. I get that....no matter how misplaced.

8. Your diversion from the topic at hand is curious. |

The topic at hand is: when one negotiates does one forecast all the options they hold?
The OP has nothing to do with your faulty assessment of past decisions. An even moreson, ignoring the situation surrounding those decisions.
You said "just like financial reform, health insurance reform, and raising taxes on the rich." You clearly are ignoring the Consumer advocacy, credit card issues that have been adressed and passed. More is in the works. Health insurance has been reformed....apparently not to you liking, but there were reasons and you know it. And reform is still in it's embryonic stages (just like SS and medicare was when forst started) To assume what we havetoday is what will be in effect for ever is naive. And raising taxes on the rich was never a platform item. The item was letting Bush's tax breaks expire. To igonore that this was negotiaed to save UB for millions is disingenious at best. Just who's side are you on on that issue? You would have wanted millions of long term unemployed to go without any money at all?

Many of this are not in this for lofty nobility. We are down to basic principals that we are not ok with compromising.

16. When haggling with a used car salesman... |
|
You have to find a guy who is willing to sell you a working car. If all he is willing to sell you is your choice of a shiny 1:32nd scale model or one of those fancy racecar shopping carts for the kids, and you need to get to work, there's not much point in pursuing things with that salesman.
Alternately, if you happen to run into a slightly methed out looking guy on the street late at night, and he says "hey, come back in this dark alley, I have just the car for you", you might want to think twice about whether its the right time to buy a car at all.
