10. In 2000 Nader pulled in 2,883,105 votes or less than 3% |
|
Sanders would not come close to that in 2012 but could still throw the election to the (R).

48. I'll take Nader any day of the week. |
|
At least he made a career out of fighting for consumers and working Americans. Unlike any other politician since 1976.
He rained on a few parades. Tough shit. If our politicians had been doing their jobs, there would have been no need for a Nader.
I still owe him a vote from 2000. If he runs, he gets it!

12. Bernie Sanders - Yup! |
|
I've supported Bernie since he was mayor of Burlington VT. My inlaws lived up there and spread the word about this great guy who governed a city and actually cared about the people. Of course he could never be elected again. It was a fluke. But it wasn't a fluke. He won again and again. Then he ran for Congress as a self-proclaimed socialist. There was no way he could win a statewide election. But he did. Then he ran for the Senate. And won.
Should he run for President? There's almost no chance. But if he does I'll do everything that I can to help.

People on DU are very political and active compared to others.
If the base is angry, that's not a good sign for Obama.
Obama needs to move left.

21. DU is a very small part of the base... |
|
and I'd argue that it's not representative of the base as a whole. But on line polls like this are interesting and do sort of give a sense as to how the DU community itself feels about any issue.

People are waking up and paying attention....I hope.

and it's track record to chose champions who has no chance of being a serious contender outside their state/district. What does it say when you seek someone who caucuses with Democrats instead of actual Democrats?

After all, consider the numerous campaign promises where he did the exact opposite of what he campaigned on/for.
I'm convinced that if the crucial issues we're dealing with now (protecting social security, medicare, medicaid and the most vulnerable in our population) had even been hinted at by a McCain or other Republican administration, they never would have seen the light of day.

But, you're a fool if you think he can be president. It's not going to happen. Sorry.
Either we re-elect Obama and put liberals in Congress, or we're going to be dealing with what we're seeing now or a completely Teabagged Washington.

All it would mean is to send a message. If you vote for Sanders, and I can see why many would, it would be just to send a message...not really voting for a President, since he could never win.

47. If Bernie Sanders got to the White House, he would be only marginally to the left of Obama |

But primaries are generally good for democracy and if Bernie wanted to give it a go, it would certainly be interesting.

50. Obama can only be as liberal as Congress allows him to be |
|
Same would go for Sanders. You're right.
But, a Sanders primary (or whoever) would do more harm than good. It would make Obama look weak, opening the door for a GOPer in the White House in 2012, which nobody wants. Even if Obama got re-elected then, Congress would still be filled with Republicans and we'd get more moderate, center-right legislation.
Electing liberals to Congress is the only way to "push Obama to the left" as so many want.

because Obama is CAPABLE OF BEING ELECTED!!!!!
This is a small but important fact that way too many DUers blinded by their liberal ideology fail to see!
Did you like McGovern? Well all his nomination did was give us 4 years of Nixon/Ford.
Did you like Dukakis? His nomination gave us Bush and Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court for a two generations!
Sure Clinton wasn't Mr. Liberal with the DLC, NAFTA, GATT, Welfare Reform etc. but HE COULD GET ELECTED. And he was much better than a second Bush term or President Dole!
You see there is the liberal universe by which this message board operates, and then there is reality.
There are people here that may not like Obama now... but he is much better than President Romney, President Bachmann or President Perry.
Talk of Bernie Sanders is ridiculous. HE IS UNELECTABLE. He will never be the President of the United States. He is to us, what Ron Paul is to conservatives. (Paul will also never be President of the United States). A Sanders run accomplishes just 1 thing. It assures the Country that the GOP will have the WhiteHouse in 2013. Hmm...I wonder how the Supreme Court look by 2016?
Sometimes I think there are people here that spend too much time on DU, the Daily Kos and with MSNBC Primetime and thus, don't understand the political reality of the rest of the world.

We know he won't win the primary. I want to see him lead a credible third party challenge in the generals. Call me crazy but I think there's enough dissatisfaction with BOTH parties that he could make things interesting.
