Next time progressives clap w/glee bout Obama low poll
numbers and talk about the need to primary him, shut them down with this:
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/07/gallup-pollster-obamas-approvals-soar-above-his-predecessors.php?ref=fpblg

Of course this goes for rethuglicans and teabaggers, but I'm focus on progressives who proudly bash (not constructive criticize) the POTUS and try to encourage apathy in GOTV efforts. We saw how well that worked in the midterms.

I haven't as active on du as I once was because of the direction that I feel it has taken. But after the press conference today I had to post this on here. I hope some will take encouragement for this link and become even more motivated to GOTV.

Yes We Can, Yes We Did, and Yes We Will!

1. K&R! Thank you for this. Your post is a breath of fresh air
in a room fogged with an incredible hatred and despire for this Democratic President.

For all their wailing, whining, and sputtering, his numbers keep higher than his predecessors during the same time. I guess those doing the complaining are really, really in the minority.

"He is overperforming," Newport said. He pointed out that both the Democrat Bill Clinton and the Republican Reagan dipped into the 30s in their approval ratings during their first terms in office. Both men, like Obama, were facing a tough economy and the low level of voter satisfaction with the overall state of the country that goes with that.

And yet: "So far, despite similarly bad economic perceptions, Obama has not fallen into the 30% range," Newport said.

It appears the Independents are siding with him. Where he loses among the ultra-leftists, he wins back from the Independents, and this will guarantee his second term. I believe Lawrence O'Donnell was the one who pointed that out.

2. Thank you for posting this
I get so tired of hearing pundits say, "No president has won reelection with an unemployment rate above 8%." That is such lazy commentary. Nothing every happens - until it happens. Insisting that one particular president cannot do something because it hasn't happened before is foolish.

Every president elected in a year ending in zero since 1840 died in office - UNTIL Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush.
No Catholic was ever elected president - until John Kennedy was.
No divorced person ever became President - until Ronald Reagan did.

And, of course, no black person was ever elected President - until Barack Obama.

Times change and circumstances for each president are different. Insisting that something is inevitable today because it's the way it's always been is incredibly short-sighted and, as I said, just flat out lazy.

7. And no black person has ever been RE-elected President, until Obama is in 2012

p.s. The 'curse' regarding presidents that were elected in a year ending in zero - was broken 'they say' because Nancy Reagan had someone come to the White House and cast an anti-curse spell. - I think I heard about it during a show on the History Channel.

Info regarding the 'curse': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_Curse

Any excuse to talk about how we're going to help re-elect President Obama and eat great food.
