CNN Poll: Drop in liberal support pushes Obama approval rating down
Washington (CNN) – President Barack Obama's approval rating is down to 45 percent, driven in part by growing dissatisfaction on the left with the president's track record in office, according to a new national survey.

A CNN/ORC International Poll also indicates that the Republican "brand" is taking a beating in the minds of Americans

According to the poll, the president's 45 percent approval rating is down three points from June. Fifty-four percent of people questioned disapprove of how Obama's handling his duties, up six points from last month. His 54 percent disapproval rating ties the all-time high in CNN polling that the president initially reached just before last year's midterm elections.

"But drill down into that number and you'll see signs of a stirring discontent on the left," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Thirty-eight percent say they disapprove because President Obama has been too liberal, but 13 percent say they disapprove of Obama because he has not been liberal enough - nearly double what it was in May, when the question was last asked, and the first time that number has hit double digits in Obama's presidency."

...

Some congressional Democrats appeared to be on the verge of open revolt against their own president Thursday night after hearing some of the details in the $3 trillion plan - a package many of them contend does not do nearly enough to ensure wealthier Americans share in the burden of stemming the tide of Washington's red ink.

4. Not nearly impressive as it seems... CNN is not an honest broker...

Here's Gallup weeklies of self-identified liberal Democrats.

Dates refer to first day in the poll sample.

Jul 11, 2011 85%
Jul 4, 2011 84%
Jun 27, 2011 86%
Jun 20, 2011 81%
Jun 13, 2011 86%
Jun 6, 2011 87%
May 30, 2011 87%
May 23, 2011 88%
May 16, 2011 90%
May 9, 2011 88%

Note the 'plunge....' Any real phenomenon would be visible across all polls.

CNN's numbers aren't that different, taking into account that CNN has sub-samples of self-identified liberals, and Democrats, but not liberal Democrats. so it's a bit Macintoshes-to-Granny Smiths.

Gallup's liberals-but-not-necessarily-liberal Democrats scores are the same as CNN's, pretty much.

MoE on sub-samples runs 1.5x to 2x the MoE of the master poll,

5. Sounds like CNN is trying to shape opinion, not report it.
He's down 3 points. MOE is 3 points.

6. CNN shaping opinion? Nah. By sheer coincidence....
..I looked out the window this morning, and there was a whole conga line of Eastern black bears heading for my woodlot, each with a roll of Charmin in one paw, and an old copy of The Nation, or Parade, or the L.L. Bean catalog or something else to read in the other.

21. That's how most polls are used, to shape opinion.
I have many problems with polls in general, but this is my biggest issue with them, whether I agree with them or not. We would be wise to ignore more polls than we do, or at the very least use polling trends instead of a single snapshot.

8. sounds like Obama may get tossed out
the truth hurts, the truth is Obama misled those who elected him and he may just pay the price for it.

11. I don't mind if it's negative...
...so long as it's empirically sound - it isn't. The polling doesn't support the claim of either the OP, or CNN...

15. There's no pleasing everybody
And some people are inflexible. So there's no pleasing them except to be just like them.

16. As I told you in the other thread:
Question 43 of the poll you're citing.

Do you think the Democratic party should renominate Barack Obama as the party's candidate for president in 2012, or do you think the Democratic party should nominate a different candidate for president in 2012?

Democrats:

Democrat 81%
Liberal 84%
Moderate 76%

And that 71% people keep citing is for all Liberals. Not just Liberal Democrats, but Greens, Socialists, etc. It also has a margin of error of +/- 7% which is terribad on a poll of +1000 people.

It's sad you're continually trying to sell polls you think might damage Obama. First Fox News, now CNN.

17. LOL. Now pull the other one.

And he's still running 8-10 pts higher than Reagan or Clinton at this point in his presidency. But never give up. If you just try a little harder, we can still get that number down.

18. But, but, but...over 85% of Liberals LOVE Obama. I read it on DU
SEVERAL times over these past weeks. Keep an eye out, there should be another posting shortly, if not already, proclaiming how much Liberals love the guy.

22. Can't stand it can you? It's funny. Shouldn't we wait for polls to corroborate this one?
Besides, it's within the MOE. Does that suggest to you a huge drop in support?
