2. It seems all we have in DC are Republicans now
I would really love to have all of these people explain how taking billions in spending a year out of the economy somehow helps a struggling economy. The same people tell us with certainty that taking billions annually out of the wealth management accounts of the insanely rich would be a disaster.

5. Dem leadership doesn't seem to realize
that they have the leverage. Wall street will ream republicans if there's a default. Repubs have to listen to their wall street masters.

29. Don't kid yourself, Wall Street is loving this fight!
I deal with institutional Treaury bondholders every day, and they are happy about this fight. They are massively short-selling Treasury bonds, so when the floor drops out, and bond prices drop, they'll move in, cover their shorts, and MAKE A KILLING!!

You and I will take a beating, and they'll walk off fat, rich, and happy.

All the Wall Street "warnings" to Repubs to settle it--it's just for show, to make the public think they want it resolved.

35. Bullshit.
The Dem leadership know exactly what leverage they have. Prove one shred of evidence that shows they don't uderstand their position of leverage right now. Obama and Reid et al have taken the time to strategize and have worked consistently to get to this point. Given all of you other posts on this topic I don't think you fail to see this....I think you're deliberately trying to divert the discussion.

4. No "may" about it

They are both weak when push comes to shove, and with the wealthy US bond holders looking at taking a hair cut if a default happens there will be lots of pushing and shoving on them to sell out the rest of us to save those billionaires from losing money.

15. When feds are borrowing 40 cents for every dollar spent
there is no happy outcome possible. The credit card is
maxed out. The credit rating agencies are threatening to lower US bond rating. I am willing to bet no one from either party will be happy about the "deal" they will reach one way or the other, sooner or later.

Have you ever seen a happy outcome for any personal bankruptcy situation? Of course not. The government also reaches a point where inflating the debt becomes unsustainable. If the solution was easy it would have been done already. Get ready for what the Greeks are going through although the situation is not yet as dire here as Greece.

16. although i usually find fault with your posts, on this one I agree with you.
There is no doubt we have a serious debt problem and it is getting worse by the minute. The real question is do we need to fix it now and are massive spending cuts wise while we are in a weak and fragile recovery from a serious recession.

Can someone please post a link to a factual article that explains what these proposed cuts would be...I'm not actually finding anything except where Pres. Obama said something about people at his income level maybe paying higher co-pays, etc...which what's wrong with that?

26. Although the cuts aren't defined, there is apparently no revenue in their offer.
Edited on Sun Jul-24-11 08:22 PM by Parker CA
Now the GOP will present their plan tomorrow which, based on the negotiating position they've landed in, will probably be around $4T+ since it's unlikely they won't try to milk this for all they can, so when the final compromise happens, it will be split between where the Dems are at $2.7T and where the GOP decides to plant their flag.

Still, nothing is done until it's all done, but this isn't trending in the direction one would hope.

27. Not surprised
this is why democrats and liberals have lost the country. Theyre perceived as weak losers. That's why although the country agrees with dems position on most issues, the republicans get votes. Until that's fixed this is hopeless. We have no guts, no fight.

I'm personally disgusted with the party a d done supporting it. Gutless spineless cowards.

34. Bush tax cuts expire in 2013 without doing anything - would be more than enough revenue.
Bush tax cuts have been the main problem all along - along with the wars of course.

37. As painful as it is to see the Democrats fold,
I could live with cuts IF they do not cut into Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, AND the tax cuts for the rich are allowed to expire next time.

But ideally a clean debt cieling bill should, and could be done if President Obama fought harder for it.
