Does anyone else remember that under Bush that many wanted
to completely dismantle SS and privatize it?

Now, the big argument is over whether or not to adjust the COLA calculation.

Even the Simpson-Bowles recommendations were to increase the eligibility age, adjust the COLA, RAISE THE CAP (which we are all for), and in some cases even increased the benefits. Nothing about privatization despite all the hand-wringing.

Our work isn't done by a long shot; but, still, that's some major progress!

2. I remember that.
Privatize and put the money in the stock market. And then it crashed and people were glad that SS wasn't privatized.

3. Yes, and according to Randi Rhodes, that's when Bush's ratings
took a dive. Wars? Cool! Torture! So be it! Touch my SS? Just try it.

5. Precisely
He went on a little tour in the February after his "re-election" and that is the point when he became a lame duck and his numbers began to really tank.

8. One wonders why so many of these people voted for Republicans
in 2010. They know what Republicans stand for. I'm sure most of them can live off their cushy retirement plans and don't need a government program. :sarcasm:

4. In addition to raising the cap, I like the thought of reducing
payouts to millionaires. They already got all of their payoffs out of working stiffs' backs.

6. This is not progress. Under Bush, he wanted to do that but we could rely on the Democrats to...

make sure that it didn't happen at all.

Now we have Obama wanting to make cuts to Social Security, and the only thing that is preventing it is pure Republican spite and their insistence on being uncooperative.

Progress would be if we were talking about expanding social security benefits.

7. Because people like us screamed bloody murder
Same with the Ryan plan.

We need to call people out on their bullshit.
