Sports Analogy in Debt Crisis: Rule Book
Boehner claims moving the goal posts.

That would be a penalty if it actually occured, though many sports fans suspect this conspiracy when their pick loses.

The actual applicable rule would be the time limits and possesion. When you have not progressed your ball 10 yards in 3 plays or you gamble on that the fourth play you will. If not you lose posession of the ball and the advantage to have your opponent posession with a field disadvantage.

Under no circumstance can you leave the ball at the foremost position and return the next day hoping the rules have changed in your favor.

The most applicable game in this respect is Five Card Stud. Again there are rules. Anty, Wager, Call, and Raise. You can leave the table before the deal, however it gives your opponets the opportunity to cheat. You cannot the the table after the deal with your cards as your opponets will likely shoot you. The best time to leave the table is at the shuffle, when you can ask for a new shuffle. If you leave the table after the deal has started then you forfiet your wager and start anew the next deal, you do not get to take the ball and return to your foremost position. This is called FOLDING you bring more chips to a new game with a new shuffle, with a new deal. This is game is nicknamed, "GUTS!"
