Tea Party Freshman Finds Voters Uneasy About Stance on Debt - Bloomberg
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-07-25/-crazy-freshman-finds-his-tea-party-stance-on-debt-makes-backers-nervous.html

Illinois Representative Joe Walsh rode a wave of economic anxiety to an upset win last November. Now, he’s trying not to get pulled under as voters concerned about a debt default turn a skeptical eye toward his service.

At a July 22 town hall meeting in a community center gym just north of Chicago in Lindenhurst, the freshman Republican paced the room as he told the crowd of about 80 constituents that President Barack Obama has mishandled the economy and overstated the repercussions of a default on the nation’s $14.3 trillion debt. Not everyone was buying it.

“I disagree with you,” said Tom Weber, a Walsh supporter who watched his construction business decline during the recession. “I think not only the president doesn’t understand, I think Congress doesn’t understand,” he added, as the audience burst into applause.

National polling shows that Republicans are critical of their party’s role in the negotiations aimed at paving the way for a vote to increase the debt ceiling. Almost 6 in 10 said Republican leaders are too resistant to a deal, according to a July 19 Washington Post-ABC News poll.

How the role of the new House majority in the debt talks is ultimately judged by voters will be critical in the 2012 elections, when Walsh and 86 other House Republican freshmen will be up for re-election and control of the chamber will hinge on their collective fates.

2. The voters in these radical right wing districts must be dolts.
Walsh was elected by people of stunning idiocy.

12. Of course I agree. But I was reading
yesterday that only about 42 percent of eligible voters turned out and Walsh beat Melissa Bean (D) 48.5 to 48.3 percent, so Dummies Ruled the election.

20. Yeah...He won by only 297 votes, I believe.
The Dems in the area underestimated him,

and so we blame ourselves, in part.

 Whoever the Dem is in your district for the next election - I hear it might be Tammy Duckworth - keep us posted so we can donate to the effort. I'm going to take particular joy in kicking Walsh's ass out of congress.

19. It's not exactly a "radical RW" district. Conservative, yes, but Melissa Bean rep'd it for 6 yrs.
Bean was endorsed by every paper and projected to win handily. Walsh wasn't even that popular with Republicans, won his primary by the skin of his teeth, and nobody really took him seriously. The counting went on for weeks after the election and Walsh won by like 300 votes. The Greens pealed away 5,000 or so.

This was yet another fuckup you can lay right on Tim Kaine's doorstep.

24. Kaine might be partly at fault. But the individual campaigns are responsible.
If the DNC doesn't provide the resources such as training. They are at fault.

If the campaign doesn't receive the training. They are at fault.
If the campaign doesn't push for contributions. They are at fault.
If the campaign doesn't campaign. They are at fault.

4. The teabaggers like Walsh better get the message soon.
Like today.

They may be killing the GOP, but at this poitn, who cares? There won't be a country left enough to matter if they don't get the message.

He said in his town hall meetings last week that he was told that people want to stop the spending in Washington only. Of course Lawrence O'Donnell wasn't buying it

9. He's my congressman, unfortunately....He starts his Town Hall meetings
with an obligatory "Pledge of Allegiance", which I find

cloying and gratuitous..I've got nothing against the Pledge,

but freaking A, like most, I think, I said it every day for

years in grammar and high school, and I really don't need

his maudlin "show" of patriotism.

As the "loyal opposition", I challenged him amidst

a crowd of fawning sycophants, and, the second time,

at least, I got a round of applause.

He has been getting a lot of push back lately,

which is a huge relief...He comes off like

a shallow, but well-trained showman and listening

to him "open" with his 40 minute, pre-question

fillibuster of "shtick"

is almost unbearable:eyes:

This guy is as looney as Allen West. Both will be out of their jobs in 2012. The nuttiness is too much for sane Americans in their districts.

I couldn't believe how much air time he was getting,

but our democratic county chairman tells me

he really pursues it. The general consensus among the Dems

here is that his real goal is a slot at Fox News.

As for MSNBC, did you see his interview with Chris Matthews last week?

He whined to Tweety "You bully the guests on your show"

mentioned the "leg tingling" thing,

and, in a seven to ten minute time slot

managed to say "Chris" sixty one times...No Kidding.

Matthews looked like he wanted to laugh at him at points,

and noticing Walsh's overuse of his name, had it counted

and told audience the next day that it came out to "sixty one times".

He's a real asshat.:wow:

like a petulant, ranting child.."Chris"!

It would be fun to see him come back and have another go at "Joe"..Joe!

14. The Pledge of Allegiance Doesn't Stick, So You Have To Keep Doing It

Unlike other pledges, the Pledge of Allegiance is a weak pledge. If you don't say it frequently, your allegiance wears out and you have to recharge.

28. There was an article the other week in either...
...The New York Times or The Washington Post about how the freshman class of tea party-backed candidates were coming up against reality. It's worth remembering that the crowd voted in in 1994 were in for a few surprises too, and while some of them stayed around (and even wound up in the Senate, eventually :-(), it was bye-bye for a lot of them.
