Obama To Announce New Automobile Mileage Standards On Friday
Ricky Kreitner | Jul. 27, 2011, 3:25 PM

President Barack Obama has struck a deal with the nation's automakers to raise mandatory fuel-efficiency standards to 54.5 miles per gallon (mpg) by 2025, a staggering 65% increase, National Journal reports.

The new figure represents a compromise between environmentalists, who had asked the government to raise the law from the present 35.5 mpg to 62 mpg, and the automakers, who pushed for 45 mpg.

One auto industry official confidentially told National Journal that the only reason they were able to strike a deal with the administration is that there will be a review in 2018 to re-assess whether the standards still made sense.

“If they’re too low, they’ll be addressed upwards. If they’re too high, they’ll be addressed downwards,” he said.

2. 'long about the time we run out of oil -perfect timing.
Considering that in the 70's and early eighties we had cars that go 50 mpgs, and "that there will be a review in 2018 to re-assess whether the standards still made sense", this is just grandstanding.

6. Basic Triangulation: 45 (automakers) + 62 (environmentalists) divide by 2 = 53.5 mpg
Edited on Thu Jul-28-11 08:17 AM by denem
We should be happy that 54.5 is a whole 1 mpg over split the difference? Staggering.

7. I wondered how long it would take for someone to piss on this
Democrats compromising: bad
Republicans refusing to compromise: bad

Its the lose-lose mantra of too many DUers who live in a political fantasy land.

What you're doing is Basic Demonization of liberal environmental policy progress by the most liberal President in decades. How lame.

19. Demonization is the word of the week?
LOL!!! :7

I like my Subaru and I think it's mileage is just fine. I can't imagine how flimsy a 62mpg vehicle would be. I'd get run over in one of those toy cars like mini-Cooper! :7

27. No, it's been a fact since before Pres. Obama was inaugurated.

Present company excluded, of course. ;)

I have a VW Golf TDI, which I think will last until 2025, if I take care of it (diesel engines live forever). The Chinese are developing hydrogen fuel cell engine technology and other nations are doing the same, albeit with less federal subsidies. Eventually, oil will become obsolete as a way to fuel cars.

That's my hope, anyway. :)

15. Kill the bill
July 2009: Disillusioned Environmentalists Turn on Obama as Compromiser

<...>

In a statement, Representative Henry A. Waxman, Democrat of California and an architect of the bill, defended the legislation. “We worked hard to craft legislation that would achieve our environmental goals while addressing the regional concerns of members of Congress,” he said. Politicians are not the only targets of dejected environmentalists.

<...>

That's six months into the Presidency.

July 2009: House passes landmark climate change bill

September 2009: Boxer, Kerry Set to Introduce Climate Bill in Senate

October 2009: Kerry-Boxer clean energy bill: Chairman’s mark and EPA analysis released

November 2009: Boxer Statement on Committee Passage of S. 1733 – The Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act

Unfortunately, by the time the bill got to the full Senate, it was attacked from all sides. Close = no bill.

No bill equals progressives won?

There is a difference between fighting for change and standing in the way of it.

20. To the contrary! I love DU and enjoy the *intelligent* discussions
and debate. I really enjoy arguing with those who disagree with me but offer reasoned argument rather than those based on misinformation, willful ignorance, speculation or conjecture/rumors. I have no patience for knee-jerk, hysterics. And I think there's a contingent of posters here who suffer from Obama Derangement Syndrome. Of course, it's not ALL DUers!! And I'd be an idiot to generalize like that, just as those who generalize that if one attempts to defend the president, he/she is an Obamabot!
