NBC/WSJ Poll: 57% say Iraq war a success. Who gets credit, Bush or Obama?
Iraq's turnaround in public opinion

Posted: Friday, December 18, 2009 2:24 PM by Mark Murray
Filed Under: Security, Polls
From NBC's Mark Murray

Here's a final set of numbers from our new NBC/WSJ poll that we find fascinating: 57% say the Iraq war has been successful, versus 40% who say it has been unsuccessful.

It's a reversal from July 2008, when 43% said Iraq was successful, and 53% said it was unsuccessful.

If perception is everything, then Obama gets credit for the Iraq war success. The results were opposite in July 2008 when Bush was President.

1. They will credit the surge, and therefore credit Bush......
The other one that's all fucked up is still Obama's.

That's how it works.

2. The public approves of it now because we're getting out, thanks to Pres. Obama.
Edited on Fri Dec-18-09 08:55 PM by ClarkUSA
There is no more nightly news about it, either, because the troops are getting out and the violence has wound down.

Ergo, the public feels less concerned about being stuck in a quagmire, because we aren't anymore.

as do the over 600,000 we killed.

7. I'd be weary of calling anything a success until we are completely out
Edited on Fri Dec-18-09 09:16 PM by davidpdx
With more then a year to go you have to cross your fingers things continue to progress well there. Ultimately, I think Bush will get the credit, unfortunately. Not that he deserves it.

8. When reading polls like this it is important
to keep in mind that only about (optimistic estimate) 40% of the American people have the slightest clue as to what is going anywhere except in their own private little world.

9. My guess is that Bush will get the credit.
Obama will get the credit for Afghanistan if things work out decently well there.

11. There is no way Iraq can be considered a success. At least by the Iraqis.
They were innocent victims of profiteers.

12. By arguing that the surge needed to be done in Afghanistan, Obama legitimized the work of Bush

13. Yuck
I don't understand how Iraq could be considered a "success" in any substantive way because the primary mission objective laid out by Bushco- disarming Saddam of his WMD- was actually already accomplished before we invaded/occupied/overthrew Saddam. In fact, if you want to be honest about it, it was Bush I and Clinton, along with the UN, whom should be given all of the credit for successfully disarming Saddam of his WMDs. Bush was hell-bent on invading/occupying Iraq/overthrowing Saddam for reasons we may NEVER know and in the process UNNECESSARILY sacrificed a LOT of lives, money, and our reputation and prestige in the world. That's NOT a *success* by any stretch of my imagination. It's kind of scary to think that so many people (if you believe the poll) believe that what should rightly be considered a "war crime" was actually some kind of "success"- which makes it likely, unfortunately, that another POTUS will believe that they are free and clear to do something like that again. *ugh* :puke:

14. If there was any "success" in Iraq
the credit should go to the dead soldiers who gave their lives for this tragic mistake, not some drunken, AWOL TANG dimwit who stumbled his way into the White House.

15. Then we can pack up and leave now, right?
Oh, no? Why not? Because it wasn't a success.

By any measure Iraq is worse off today than it was before we invaded. Less water, less electricity, less public safety, less employment. Truth is today's Iraq is a hell on earth, but if you want to call it success, take a poll in America. Those misinformed victims of non stop propaganda will tell you it was a success.

60 years or more after hostilities have ended. Why do you think
we will leave Iraq completely?
