Red alert for Rand Paul
The Ron Paul revolution was looking alive and well in Kentucky, where Rand Paul had been making progress on convincing voters he was the most conservative candidate in the state’s Senate race against the GOP establishment-favorite, Trey Grayson.

But last night’s abrupt resignation of Paul’s campaign spokesman Christopher Hightower – after the Kentucky political blog Barefoot and Progressive unearthed racist comments on his MySpace website – threaten to derail that momentum.

“Today the Rand Paul campaign became aware of some disturbing images on a social network site attributed to a campaign staffer,” Paul’s campaign said in a statement. “These images in no way represent Dr. Paul or his campaign nor do they represent the beliefs of this staff member. These images are reprehensible and have no place in civil discourse.”

Hightower’s personal site contained explicitly racist language, poetry ranting about “Christian lies” and a video of him denouncing Southern Baptists. It also featured footage from a death-metal bang he sang for, replete with Satanic-style lyrics.

Hightower drew controversy earlier in the campaign for putting together a parody Web video likening Grayson to Adolf Hitler.

Needless to say, that won’t play well with Kentucky Republican voters, a socially conservative bunch.

1. How the Pauls reconcile their hatred of gays with their social libertarianism
I will never, ever know.

2. I kind of thought it was understood that the Pauls were racist... And I'm guessing
the majority of followers wouldn't be bothered too much...
