Understanding Health Insurance Reform

Understanding Health Insurance Reform

December 18, 2009

Our current health insurance system can be very confusing, but there are few key elements of health insurance reform, and understanding those critical components can help make sense of it all. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act reforms the American health insurance market by reining in skyrocketing health care costs, ending coverage denials due to pre-existing conditions, prohibiting coverage rescissions, eliminating lifetime coverage limits and restricting use of annual limits, eliminating co-payments and deductibles for preventive care, ensuring Americans have a source of trusted information about their health insurance, and providing health insurance choices to cover about 94 percent of all legal residents under age 65.

2. It's the DPC report. Byron Dorgan is the chair, but
then again he supported Nelson's amendment. Don't expect him to be a hero for long.

5. My insurance is going up 40% in April
I am being gouged by my 'insurance' company. Either I pay 5k more per year for the same already eviscerated coverage I have now, or I'm stuck with a 'health savings plan' which has a 5k yearly deductible that must be paid before any coverage kicks in. Either way I'm screwed. If I break my arm it makes more sense to fly to Costa Rica and have it set there for 150$ than to pay to have it done here. How fucked up is that?

I don't qualify for the exchange. This bill helps me how?

...it does absolutely nothing for me. It is a hollowed out toothless husk. Why keep pretending otherwise?

7. Easy. When we go to prison for not paying for HC, we will have free healthcare...
we are not paying for a scam.

8. Until they come up with a plan
that reduces costs so we're not paying 2 to 3 times as much as other countries for health care, it's not reform, it's a scam. All they're doing is redistributing the exorbitant costs of a failed system onto more people, mostly young people. You can't trust any of these politicians. They're desperate to pass anything that can be called "health care reform."
