Israel poised to strike Iran?

http://blogs.aljazeera.net/middle-east/2009/12/17/israel-poised-strike-iran

From Haaretz:

"US President Barack Obama has warned his Chinese counterpart that the United States would not be able to keep Israel from attacking Iranian nuclear installations for much longer."

As the article admits, this was all part of the political game designed to coerce Beijing into signing on to Washington's latest sanctions package, and it failed; China has continued to distance itself from the anti-Iran position.

"The Chinese have even refused a Saudi-American initiative designed to end Chinese dependence on Iranian oil, which would allow China to agree to the sanctions,"
-------

So why have "senior officials in Jerusalem" chosen to leak this to Haaretz at this time?

looks like a lot of machinations are going on

1. Israel has had their 'secret' nukes for how many years?
Never signed on to the non-proliferation treaty, or even admitted to their nukes. Iran has allowed inspections, monitoring of its nuclear sites and the IAEA has repeatedly stated they have no evidence Iran is even attempting to acquire nuclear weapons. Every nation is entitled to nuclear energy. Iran, despite all its oil, lacks the refineries to keep up with energy demand from its own citizens. And, sanctions! For what??? If Iran is sanctioned for developing nuclear energy, then so should every other nation on earth with it be.

This is so hypocritical, it's sickening.

2. I suppose the IAF could slug it out with the USAF as it overflies Iraq, Turkey or KSA -
what, exactly, does this mean that "the United States would not be able to keep Israel from attacking Iranian nuclear installations for much longer"?
