What is the newest deal with petition the White House at the .gov website?

Some TV head was talking about creating petitions on the whitehouse.gov website.. If 5000 people or more signed the petition, policy wonks within the WhiteHouse would consider addressing the petition. Does anyone know anything about this? Seems a good way to create a direct link to the White House that no one in DC can blather away the other way.. Like tax the rich petition. Legalize marijuana petition. End all wars now petition. The pipeline...

get anyone to listen? 5000 signatures isn't a lot.. More signatures are signed to anti-war petitions all the time.
