Some other countries also have a labor day holiday, but even most of them don't hold it on the same day we do.

May day is much more common. The US hated to celebrate labor on the same day as the rest of the western world so we got labor day.

It seems to be a combination of Labor Day and Thanksgiving, judging from its Japanese name "Kinro (Labor) Kansha (Thanks) no Hi (Day)".
There are a few marches, parades, etc. that are held on May 1, though.
