TPM: Elizabeth Warren Officially Launching Senate Campaign Against Scott Brown
Elizabeth Warren Officially Launching Senate Campaign Against Scott Brown

ERIC KLEEFELD SEPTEMBER 13, 2011, 3:15 PM

Former White House financial reform adviser Elizabeth Warren will officially launch her campaign for U.S. Senate from Massachusetts on Wednesday, challenging incumbent Republican Sen. Scott Brown, a source close to Warren told TPM on Tuesday.

“The pressures on middle class families are worse than ever, but it is the big corporations that get their way in Washington,” Warren said in a statement. “I want to change that. I will work my heart out to earn the trust of the people of Massachusetts.”

Warren has been exploring a run in recent weeks, and has been on a listening tour of the state.

Brown was elected to the Senate in a special election in January 2010, following the death of long-time Sen. Ted Kennedy, in a stunning upset against Democratic state Attorney General Martha Coakley. A recent survey showed Brown leading the lesser-known Warren by 44%-35%, but with the incumbent below the crucial 50% mark in a state that is expected to vote Democratic by a wide margin in the presidential race.

4. Huffpo's Sam Stein broke the story and has more.
The consumer advocate will be spending the day tomorrow greeting commuters in Boston, before travelling to New Bedford, Framingham, Worcester, and Springfield. She has already picked up an endorsement from a prominent nurses union in the state and has been informally courted by other unions.

National Democrats are wary of saying much, if anything, about her candidacy, lest they give off the impression that they are meddling in a state primary. But it has been apparent for some time now that party officials view her as a more formidable candidate than Brown's other prospective challengers, including Newton Mayor Setti Warren, social entrepreneur Alan Khazei and state Rep. Thomas Conroy.

One recent poll had Warren trailing Brown by just nine percentage points, with more than a year remaining before the election.

She can and others running can too. Brown is not invincible.
The only problem is that the media love him.

16. Why do you say that, bigdarryl? I was just going to ask those
who would know better than I, what her chances looked like. But here you are with this statement so I'm curious as to why you feel that way?

9. I was fine with who was already running. I am fine with her too.
We have a great bench on the democratic side and any of them would make a great senator.

10. Lucky you to live in Massachusetts and to have Elizabeth Warren to make your senator.
I intend to contribute to her campaign. She's an extraordinary person and would make a fine, fine senator.

24. I never heard this story
I just heard that his dad was a Republican politician in that town and young Scottie got interested in politics seeing him run. (A claim that never made sense as if your goal is politics, it would seem an odd choice to be a juvenal delinquent after that point and to pose for Cosmo. It somehow does not seem part of a plan.

The other odd thing is, why didn't his dad support his son enough that he didn't "have to steal steaks" to eat. I can't imagine that anyone elected to an office was likely to be impoverished - was he?

26. I think Brown is a good campaigner, I really hope Warren is better.
We need some fresh D blood in MA badly.

I am excited to hear what Warren has to say on a number of issues; especially in regards to public unions. Since the Dem Gov and Leg threw them under the bus this summer, it would be a breath of fresh air for someone in the D party to support them loudly and proudly. :-)

After Helping Banks Water Down Dodd-Frank, Scott Brown Tries To Claim He’s A Wall Street Reformer

Facing a potential electoral challenge from consumer advocate Elizabeth Warren next year, Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) appears to be trying to portray himself as a stronger Wall Street reformer than she, telling NECN this month that he “worked very hard” to ensure the passage of the Dodd-Frank financial reform law:

<...>

In fact, Brown initially opposed the entire Wall Street reform bill and threatened to join the Republican filibuster of the legislation, which would have prevented it from even getting an up-or-down vote on the Senate floor.

Morning Joe, of course, had a long discussion this morning led by Mark Halperin about how hard it would be for Elizabeth Warren to beat Scott Brown. We will indeed see. Wall Street darling Scott Brown has raised $10 million dollars for his campaign. Let's see how much Elizabeth Warren can raise from the people of this country.
