but now, I'm kinda of embarrassed to subject them to the National Political Left Globe

Kpete's Marine Corps Times cover that you have in your list of photos is still the top story as I post this. That alone makes today a significant improvement over... like the last 3 years. :)

15. Thanks, Frenchie.
Moment by moment reactions don't tell the real story. What history will remember is in the weeks and months and years of steady, continuous effort to roll back the enormous tide of uncaring greed and cruelty that has overwhelmed America and Americans for the last three decades.

This is a timely and eloquent reminder of why we cannot let the perfect ideal be the enemy of the practical effort.

appreciatively,
Bright

29. You really should have a picture of Bush's pen and signature for the Iraq withdrawal
The troops are leaving according to the Status of Forces Agreement reached between Iraq and the US in 2008. This agreement was reached during the Bush Administration. The agreement called for all troops to leave by Dec 2011.

Obama had a golden opportunity to withdraw all the troops as soon as he took office, but he squandered that opportunity. Also, there's a good possibility that the troops will stay beyond Dec 2011.

Just the facts, ma'am. :hi:

72. As you mentioned--Iraq sort-of-withdrawal
And Afghanistan non-withdrawal.

However, Frenchie, you left out the new GI Bill and some pretty good benefits through the VA (such as the new Caregiver program)--even though it is only effective for post-9/11 vets and leaves a lot of really hurt Viet Nam and inter-war and Gulf War I vets. Overall, a plus.

Thanks for listing those other accomplishments in your backhand sorta of snarky way.....

but I think they got the drift.

But thank you for your input. So nice for you to acknowledge the positive for a refreshing change!

123. I acknowledge positive when there IS positive
and I wasn't being snarky--just honest. I have dealt with dozens of veterans on a personal basis and the big complaint is that the pre-9/11 vets feel like fish that's been left out too long. Maybe if you tried talking to veterans honestly, you'd understand. But the pre-9/11 vets are used to getting treated that way.

and assigning it to Bush. Guess Bush caught OSAMA too, since he was working on it,
right....according to Dick "torture" Cheney?

But since Obama opposed the war from the start, and ran on troop withdrawal in 2007-2008,
while Bush simply started the war and it was ongoing the entire time he was in office,
I'm gonna give Obama the fucking credit for executing the plan. Hope you don't mind too much. K?

Edited on Thu Sep-15-11 07:32 PM by Cali_Democrat
I just disagree with you about Iraq. The troops are leaving according to the agreement enacted during the Bush Administration. Did Obama execute the plan? Yes, but he was legally obligated to do so. When it comes to Iraq, there was no change in withdrawal policy from the Bush Administration to the Obama Administration.

97. Thu Aug 19, 2010 at 10:00 AM PDT The Race to Credit Bush for Drawdown of Combat Troops+*
It is par for the course as it relates to this President, the same old tired song, like death and taxes, it is decreed and has somehow become a certainty that no Obama milestone will ever be reached without the accompanying clamor of discontent from the President’s detractors that serve to marginalize or diminish its impact.

Still, last night while reading through the comments of various diaries announcing the withdrawal of the last American combat brigade from Iraq, I was struck with amazement to actually see individuals denying President Obama credit for the Iraqi troop withdrawal, while bestowing the honor on George W. Bush, due ostensibly to a formality known as the U.S.-Iraq Status of Forces Agreement, which I will address momentarily.

I suppose it was expected that Republicans would try to credit George W. Bush for the ending of "Operation Freedom", a misguided enterprise which ignominiously caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent individuals and years of untold suffering...but Democrats? Well, I guess so.

Nevertheless, the spin is on to credit George W. Bush for the drawdown of Iraqi combat troops. The message is clear; this is Bush’s doing and certainly not the achievement of that usurper Barack Obama. Former Bush speechwriter, now Washington Post contributor, Michael Gerson suggested as much as he commented on a recent speech by President Obama on the pull down of said troops.

I didn't find the speech to be a particularly generous speech. I mean, this is really the implementation of the status of forces agreement that was agreed to in 2008 under the Bush administration. Barack Obama, people forget, actually voted against funding for the troops. He opposed the surge. He gave a speech without mentioning the surge or General Petraeus. I think that that's probably, you know, he's attempting to take credit for something that he opposed.

What Mr. Gerson is omitting, however, is the larger fact that Barack Obama was against the Iraqi War in general, and therefore was committed to ending it. This was in contrast to the Republicans, and George W. Bush, who were galvanized by the war, and were committed to its continuation.

But here we are at the U.S.-Iraq Status of Forces Agreement, which is ironically now being used to shore up George W. Bush’s anti war credentials. If the Iraqi debacle were not so tragic it would be high comedy indeed.

Many seem to have conveniently forgotten that while presidential candidate Barack Obama was pledging to end the war in Iraq, the Republicans were holding fast to this maddening escapade, and it was partly due to his focus on ending this travesty, and the growing unease of a weary nation, why the trajectory of the conflict began to change. A CBS News headline from July 21, 2008 read:

Obama, Maliki Agree On Iraq Withdrawal By 2010
The story went on to explain:

Face to face with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama gained fresh support Monday for the idea of pulling all U.S. combat forces out of the war zone by 2010. The Iraqi government did not endorse a fixed date, but indicated it hoped American combat units could be out of Iraq sometime in 2010. That timeframe falls within the 16-month withdrawal plan proposed by Obama.

If memory serves me correctly, Obama was widely criticized by many in the media and the Republican Party for daring to contemplate the pulling out of combat troops from Iraq, not just by 2010, but by any timetable. The media, as well as the Republicans, were put to shame when Nouri al-Maliki, as well as many in the international community agreed with the presidential candidate. How did Obama’s Republican rival, John McCain, feel about this?

Back in the U.S., Republican rival John McCain said he hoped Obama's visit would open his eyes to the danger of withdrawal timetables.

And what about that peacenik George W. Bush, the man being credited by some for the pull out of combat troops due to the status of forces agreement? Once again, CBS News:

In Washington, the White House expressed displeasure with recent public comments by Iraqi leaders on the withdrawal question and suggested they might have the U.S. election on their minds.

Still, no trip down the ol’ Iraqi conflict memory lane, as it relates to the withdrawal of combat troops, would be complete without a word or two from the Iraqis themselves. Iraqi spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said this following Obama’s meeting with al-Maliki:

We are hoping that in 2010 that combat troops will withdraw from Iraq.

And this from Iraq’s Sunni vice president, Tariq al-Hashemi:

I'd be happy if we reach an agreement to say, for instance, the 31st of December 2010.

It is interesting to note that while the Iraqi’s were hoping for a withdrawal by December 2010. Obama, based on this report and statements on the campaign trail was pursuing a much earlier departure.

Once again, these statements were made during the presidential candidate’s trip to Iraq on July 21, 2008, so what about this U.S.-Iraq Status of Forces Agreement? Well, it should be also noted that the first signing of this agreement was made on November 17, 2008, at least four months following the Obama-al-Mali declarations.

No, Barack Obama is definitely not some wanton interloper in this entire process. From the early days of his presidential campaign he sought a reduction of U.S. troops in Iraq, and formulated a timetable for its implementation. Yes, the status of forces agreement between the U.S. and Iraq established a timetable and condition of withdrawal of U.S. troops from that besieged nation, but beyond its physical signing, let it be clear, George W. Bush was definitely not the architect of what occurred in Iraq yesterday.

76. The glass might as well be totally empty from your standpoint....
And I hear you asking for a full glass, as you choose not to recognize water, in whatever quantity
if the glass isn't brimming over....

So I'm guessing that perhaps you'd rather die of thirst if the glass is not totally full,
and of course, that's your choice, but unfortunately, I every time I go to take a drink
you knock the glass out of my hand and get upset with the fact that I would even think
to drink the half glass....

I realize that you don't mind it, but I'd rather not have to die due to what you have
decided I should do. So thanks, but no thanks.

103. I do have to reply to this. My parents, both in their 90's, have hit that donut hole.
My mom is now paying $4,500 out of pocket before her insurance will pay any more money for her medications.
These medications are saving her toe, foot, leg and life.
My Dad is $200.00 away from the donut hole. If he buys one more inhaler, it will put him over the limit,
and he too will have to pay $4,500 out of pocket before insurance kicks in again.
$4,500 is half of their savings. It is all they have. So that my Dad can breathe, read 'live,'
we have to purchase his inhalers through Canada for the rest of the year.
(And the idiots in Washington are trying to stop us from being able to do that.)
A 90 day supply here in the U.S. costs over $700.00. We can purchase the exact same medication through
Canada for $200.00, $133.00 if we go with generics. We cannot purchase generics of this medication in
the U.S.

That donut hole is HUGE. Please don't say it is gone. I am watching my parents worry themselves
sick over this, and I'm not getting any sleep trying to figure out ways to help them.
They do not qualify for the 'free' medication programs that are run by the pharmaceutical companies.
If you have insurance, even if it isn't paying for your meds, you can't qualify.

INSANITY.

it is smaller by 1/2....
And hopefully it will be closed more as we go.

Legislation closes "donut hole" for senior's prescriptions
1/1/11

A piece of the federal health-care reform law went into effect Jan. 1, closing a coverage gap in the Medicare Part D prescription drug program. The reform law will discount the cost of brand name drugs by 50 percent for beneficiaries of the drug program that fall into the “donut hole,” meaning their total yearly drug costs exceeded $2,800.

Prior to the enacting of the law, seniors who had entered the “donut hole” were then responsible for 100 percent of their future drug costs.

There are about 244,402 seniors in New York state and 29,158 in the Hudson Valley who fall into that coverage gap, according to U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer. Over the next decade, the “donut hole” fix will save seniors about $2.2 billion statewide. Hudson Valley seniors will save about $262 million, Schumer said.

Close the "doughnut hole" in Medicare prescription drug plan

"Barack Obama wants to close the 'doughnut hole' in the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Program that limits benefits for seniors with more than $2,250 but less than $5,100 in annual drug costs. Approximately 4 million seniors hit the doughnut hole in 2006, paying full price for drugs while also paying drug plan premiums."

Health care bill will gobble up doughnut hole -- eventually

Updated: Friday, March 26th, 2010 | By Louis Jacobson

The health care bill signed into law by President Barack Obama is poised to "close the 'doughnut hole' in the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Program that limits benefits for seniors with more than $2,250 but less than $5,100 in annual drug costs."

First, some background on the doughnut hole. In 2010, seniors in the Medicare Part D program must pay the first $310 for prescriptions before coverage kicks in. For subsequent total drug costs between $310 and $2,830, the government will pay 75 percent and beneficiaries pay 25 percent. (The numbers are different from Obama's promise due to increases since he made the statement.)

Then, starting at $2,830, beneficiaries must pay the entire costs until they hit an out-of-pocket limit of $4,550. That's what's known as the doughnut hole. After that, "catastrophic coverage" begins, with the government paying 95 percent of costs.

The hole won't be closed immediately, but will instead be phased in over the next 10 years.

This year, beneficiaries who reach the doughnut hole will receive a $250 rebate. After that, federal subsidies will enable the patient's share of the payment to be gradually reduced from 100 percent to 25 percent by 2020. At 25 percent, the doughnut hole range will have the same co-pay rate as the prior range.

Separately, brand-name drugmakers will be obligated to provide discounts for prescriptions filled through Medicare Part D starting in 2011.

The hole will hang on for a while, but its eventual disappearance is now enshrined in law. Since Obama did not specify a timeline in his promise, we are rating it a Promise Kept.

55. Don't tell me there's no difference between Obama and a Republican!
I have issues and disagreements with Mr. Obama, and I'd like to see him move more to the left, especially on health care and job creation; but, he's light-years from the ghastly GOP candidates.

Just listen to their 'let him die' rhetoric and the policies they suggest.

There is a difference between Republicans and Democrats:
  • All the people on the podium with Sen. Bernie Sanders supporting his bill to strengthen Social Security are Democrats,
  • all the supporters of the bill to restrict outsourcing of American jobs were Democrats.
  • all but a few of the people supporting Health Care Reform were Democrats

Yeah, the Health Care Reform Act could have been stronger, so could the jobs bill, and too many Democrats are on board with the 'Free' Trade agreements that have sent our jobs overseas; but, progressive Democrats are virtually the only people working for change in those areas.

I visited the website of healthcare.gov, and used the online wizard to shop for insurance.
If I put that I have NO medical conditions, and just myself, the cost of insurance would be nearly 2 weeks pay.
Thats if I allow a $1,000-$2,000 deductible.

Alot of people can't afford health insurance and never will get health care until we have a single payer system
funded by taxes.

Sigh, I hope I can avoid getting sick or injured.

I understand that the main positives are for children under the ages of 26,

and it is CERTAIN, that the Republicans hope to be able to reverse before
it does start helping people, and the subsidies kick in. of course.

130. The WH needs to hire Frenchie...
She does a better job selling this Administrations accomplishments than anyone they have up there right now...

132. Kicked and Recommended ...
I've had a change of heart, lately, about how I feel about President Obama. He's faced a considerable amount of disrespect and obstruction over the last two years. I'm with him 100%. Thanks for this thread, Frenchie. It helped me refocus.

133. Glad I could help!
Thanks for recognizing that it takes a village,
and we are it. If we don't recognize the good,
then we are blind, and that wouldn't be good! :hi:

134. This is a really excellent OP, and
just imagine how much more popular it would have been had it included a quote from Bill Clinton validating Obama's Presidency!

137. At this point, I don't think it matters what Obama has done or what he might do.....
I think that it is the folks missing from this thread that is telling, IMO......
Guess acknowledging the positives is like a disease; don't want it, and don't need it!

140. This should be what many ops are about......
about the fact that Obama stated that he would gladly accept the label of warrior
in a class war. But no......we can't rally around this President! That might make
him too effective, and we can't have that! :(

141. I am proud of this President,
and I wish others would concentrate some times on the great things he has done,
instead of always searching for the negative, which can always be found.
