14. sure there is- and it's a good thing- a very good thing. It's big in my town.
in addition to what's in the article at the link- there's a slow lending circle and people loan and share equipment- not to mention the food venture center and the center for an agricultural economy, both non-profits.

12. I was going to say a contradiction in terms, but I like yours better
Trying to figure out what the "venture" part of venture capitalism is. If I consider that it is money funds that risk their capital to give capital to promising startups in return for capital gains, maybe venture socialism would be money given to promising enterprises started to help people with a specific need with the payback being a better world. This does sound like a great idea.

7. its when the government loans capital to private business
Biggest example in US history - Bush's TARP - $700 billion.

(vs $535 MILLION for Solyndra).

Would DeMint say that about Bush? No chance.

9. Not to defend DeMint, AT ALL, but...
Venture socialism is a way for socialists to make a way for themselves in a capitalist society/state.

Local food, as well as member and worker-owned cooperatives could be looked at as more "socialist" structures.

I work for a cooperative where there is no owner. The members own the cooperative and run it democratically. There are no "profits" per se.

Every member receives a check at the end of the year concurrent to their level of membership (full members receive more) and the amount they spend at the store.

We have no owners, but there is a managerial layer. The rest of us (majority) are Union workers, and members.

When this business opened in 1999 it was a venture into a more democratic *(therefore socialist) way of running businesses.

Hope this helps!

I'm sure it will be echoed in the months ahead to include the General Election.

15. here you go.
<snip>

Hardwick is a lot like how it sounds – unemployment in the town is 40 percent higher than the state average; incomes are 25 percent lower. But in the last few years, Hardwick has returned to its historical roots in farming, with a new twist – local, sustainable agriculture. It’s growing a vibrant local food system that is restoring not only some jobs and higher wages, but a sense of community and food that’s connected to it.

A diverse network of “agrepreneurs” in Hardwick– High Mowing Organic Seeds, Pete’s Greens, Jasper Hill Farm, the Vermont Food Venture Center and so on - are producing organic and artisanal foods and seeking investors. Business owners share advice, capital and facilities. About a hundred jobs have been created.
