I've seen some disagreement about what it means to call someone a "sell out."
Some take it hyper-literally to mean that money has changed hands, quid pro quo... like literally selling a vote or action in office.
Most people, I think, use "sell out" in the vernacular sense of becoming insincere and commercial in order to achieve success, whether seeking record sales or the presidency. It is a term one uses to express disappointment in a formerly principled and perhaps rebellious figure becoming of the system. (Like when The Clash did "train in vain")
What is comical is that some folks denounce the "sell out" label as applied to President Obama as a factual lie.
That's wacky! It's a value judgment.
Unless one thinks the term is a formal accusation of bribery or something.

2. Actually, in the current healthcare debate, "sell out" is a particularly apt phrase |
|
given that it is the exact opposite of "buy-in".

6. He tries hard to appear to be "reasonable"....... |
|
but it's just an act.
He's been this way since his support for Hillary.
He got over it, kinda, but perhaps, not really.

But they always say it isn't personal, before they start to bash Obama.

13. That's bullshit, the majority of us not only got over it but also voted for Obama. |
|
We will also vote for Obama in 2012, we may bitch and whine but we at least vote.
I find it ironic that we are still called the bitter ones when I see many of the biggest (supposed) Obama supporters of the past trying their hardest to undermine our president.

What are you? DU's own phrase of the day calendar?
I would think, that after your condescending thread informing everyone that they were incorrectly using the "under the bus" phrase revealed you to not only be wrong, but that you hadn't even bothered to look up the origins and meaning of the phrase in the first place, that you would dial down your efforts to "school" everyone.
(and yes, I know that the above sentence is a grammatical nightmare)
