Name one law passed last century that was good enough to have been passed
Edited on Sun Dec-20-09 03:17 AM by CreekDog
any subject, whether it is health care related, civil rights related.

please name one law that was not a travesty of failure for what it included or excluded.

i want to come up with one law in the past 109 years that actually should have been passed as it was rather than shelved to try again.

i can't think of any so i'm asking for your help.

Among those I thought of, but that really didn't pass muster:

Medicare (only helped those over 65). Progressives were wrong to vote for it. FAIL.
Social Security (actually helped relatively few and the notch babies were particularly screwed...FDR should have been ashamed). FAIL.
Civil Rights Act of 1964 (didn't even include necessary voter protections, how could those sellout congresspeople vote for such a thing?). FAIL.
Landmark Environmental Laws of 1972, didn't include Superfund. How could they do that? Are people telling me that good liberals voted for that tripe? FAIL.

So like I said, I'm still coming up empty here. From what I can tell, all these laws were so flawed that we would have been better off not passing them at all.

2. Mandatory sentencing for crack cocaine.
3 strikes you're out. NAFTA. Telecommunications Act. Welfare reform.

Would you like me to go on? I haven't even started on what Truman did.

14. My point is, they are all bad.
But everyone told us they would be, or get, or make things better.

They did not.

5. What?
The OP asks "i want to come up with one law in the past 109 years that actually should have been passed as it was rather than shelved to try again."

And you think that pile of crap laws should have passed?

Creepy!

13. S/he is saying that the current "reform" is another NAFTA
There is no way of improving mandatory private insurance other than imposing direct regulation on insurance companies like for instance the Netherlands. And if they don't have the backbone to do it now, how in bleeding hell does giving insurance shitstains a trillion dollars make it easier to do later?

19. It is not just giving them money, they have to provide health coverage
I am so sick of this lazy, hate filled meme. Yes, hate, because your hatred of "insurance companies" exceeds the desire to get more people covered.

27. Crap. Where does it say that they have to pay claims?
Shitty coverage that YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO ACTUALY USE is not worth having. It sure the hell is not worth having the IRS go after you for choosing paying for ongoing medical expenses instead of premiums for a shitty plan.

6. Oh please tell us what Truman did ...

Given your choices of what laws were "good enough" when they were passed, I can't *wait* to hear this.

Of course I know that's not what you meant, but this reveals clearly something rather important about the level of debate occurring among the public.

People aren't paying attention to what those with whom they perceive to disagree are saying.

And I don't have time to tell you what Truman did. Read A Peoples History, or google Truman Doctrine.

17. What's the deal with that?

Why do people feel as though it is okay to make a point and then when challenged tell others to do the work for them?

And if you believe I didn't get your point, why don't you explain it? Clearly it was made badly, given the responses you got.

8. So you are saying that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 should not have been passed
as it must have been flawed since it DID NOT include Title IX.

Thus passage of Title IX should not have happened because in the absence of the Civil Rights Act (so flawed, so flawed...) Title IX was sorely lacking in everything that the Civil Rights Act included (that should not have been passed because it did not include enough).

I guess we still don't have any good laws.

16. Revocation of the Fairness Doctrine under Reagan?
In became law in 1949 but was revoked in 1985. I don't know if this fits you parameter, but I believe, in todays charged political environment, the Fairness Doctrine would have been a third rail that no one would dare touch.
