Perry: I’m Not Slick
Texan trolling for support in Michigan straw poll

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich.—Coming off a rocky debate performance that led some conservative elites to question whether he is prepared to handle the pressure of a presidential campaign, Texas Gov. Rick Perry acknowledged Saturday that his performance isn't on par with some of his Republican rivals. But, he told GOP activists at a party conference here, he makes up for his lack of debating skills with a consistent set of principles his opponents lack.

"No other candidate on that stage has the record that I have. Yep, there may be slicker candidates and there may be smoother debaters, but I know what I believe in," Perry said -- an tacit shot at his chief rival, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

He added, "So we came here and I did get a chance to speak to him about that. And he said. 'Yeah, I just got tired...I was tired, exhausted, and everyone's throwing the junk at (me).' And that's a normal reaction. I said just don't do it. ..He fell into the trap."

Many observers have remarked that Texas Gov. Rick Perry appears to grow tired during the course of debates, which seemed to happen again last night in Orlando. What could explain this? Brian Ledbetter, who blogs at Snapped Shot, e-mailed me to suggest that Perry's debate fatigue may be a result of his having undergone back surgery in July:

1. I wonder if he wears some kind of back brace? Might account for that
weird looking collar and odd whole front of his suit look. I saw someone else noted that he doesn't turn his head when he talks.

3. John Kennedy Broke His Back In The Pacific
It didn't stop him from handing Richard Nixon his ass in their debates.

It also didn't stop him from having a prodigious sex life.

2. It's starting to look like the governorship of Texas allows for a lot
more "sleepy time" than the average job, never mind POTUS.

Remember Bush's mid-day naps and 9pm bedtime?

4. Texas governorship is not a powerful one.
Edited on Sat Sep-24-11 03:05 PM by Ilsa
The real executive power lies more with the Lt Gov, who is president of the Senate and sets the Senate's agenda. Lt Gov also controls the budgeting process as a leader of the Legislative Budget Board. Well, I would argue that the Lt Gov has more power than the Gov.

5. I actually remember that from when Shrub was running. Too bad that fact
never seemed to become common knowledge. Maybe this time around? Here's hoping...

8. If THIS kind of thing makes him "tired"...
...how the hell is he supposed to handle the Presidency? Is he going to turn in every night at 9 PM while the country falls apart, like Shit-for-Brains did?
