Obama Slams GOP’s Booing Of Gay Soldier: ‘That’s Not Reflective Of Who We Are’

Obama Slams GOP’s Booing Of Gay Soldier: ‘That’s Not Reflective Of Who We Are’

By Igor Volsky

At a fundraiser in San Jose on Sunday, President Obama slammed Republicans for jeering Stephen Hill, a gay soldier who asked about the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell during the GOP presidential debate in Orlando, Florida:

“Some of you here may be folks who actually used to be Republicans but are puzzled by what’s happened to that party, are puzzled by what’s happening to that party. I mean, has anybody been watching the debates lately? You’ve got a governor whose state is on fire denying climate change,” he said, to applause. “It’s true. You’ve got audiences cheering at the prospect of somebody dying because they don’t have health care and booing a service member in Iraq because they’re gay.” “That’s not reflective of who we are,” he added. “This is a choice about the fundamental direction of our country. 2008 was an important direction. 2012 is a more important election.”

Former GOP Govs. Jon Huntsman (UT) and Gary Johnson (NM) condemned the audience’s response, and former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), who claims to not have heard the boos, also apologized on Friday, saying, “I condemn the people who booed that gay soldier. That soldier is serving our country. I thank him for his service to our country. I’m sure he’s doing an excellent job. I hope he’s safe and I hope he returns safely and does his mission well.”

3. It is very reflective of who some folks are....
some of whom were surrogates, speakers and entertainers on Obama's campaign. I hope these words from the President indicate that he will no longer produce or support events at which gay people are openly mocked and 'preached against' as he did during the primary. Sometimes seeing that hate in others so clearly can open a person's eyes to their own past actions, and I hope that is the case here.

4. It was in very bad taste. But these are the people who cheered the death...
of a thirty yr. old uninsured man, and Rick Perry's execution record in TX. When people show you who they are, believe them.

8. These GOP candidates are all hypocrites
once Obama said something about it suddenly they are sympathetic, and these are the same people that wants to run this country,
the day they get their hands on power is the day America as we know it ends.

They are all used car salesmen dying to get your money, once they get it they will be laughing at you for buying a clonker
while banking your cash.

10. Actually it is a reflection of who we are.

Those boos have been going on for a LONG time. Nice to see the President finally take notice.

And until very recently, it was legal to expel him for his orientation.

11. Cheering state murder and booing soldiers
I hate every republican with every fiber of my being. My most passionate wish in life is that we have it out with them before I shuffle off. even if I've managed to expatriate before it happens (another dire wish), I'll come back and help.

13. At one time Obama thought that Donnie McClurkin and Rick Warren were reflective of his views.
I don't see a big difference between McClurkin's career of emotionally torturing young people just because they are gay and a couple of anonymous shouters against a gay soldier. Actually, I do. McClurkin is much, much worse.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to call the president a hypocrite on this.

"I'm afraid I'm going to have to call the president a hypocrite on this."

Well, people are entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts.

18. Bullshit narrative. You think you know what Pres. Obama thinks? Prove it. Link? Quotes?
Edited on Tue Sep-27-11 09:14 PM by ClarkUSA
Or do you just cherrypick symbolic one-time speaker at a campaign event and a one-time speaker at an inauguration as a focus while ignoring everything ePresident Obama has done for LGBT civil rights?

You do realize that homophobic, anti-Semitic Billy Graham spoke at Bill Clinton's inaugurations, right? And that Hillary considers Billy Graham "her solace"? That must make the Clintons are homophobic and anti-Semitic, right?

:sarcasm:

15. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again
… we have not yet seen the lowest of the lows, because I really do fear for our Country from within. This Presidents greatest threat will come from Right-Wing Americans.

They’ve shown they have ZERO Respect during Presidential Speeches
They’ve shown that they WILL Bring Loaded Guns to a Political Event
They’ve shown they CAN call the President ANYTHING they want
They’ve shown they Don’t have to respect ANY Request from the President of The United States
Just remember … it’s only been two and half years, can you image the sheer lunacy that would happen if Obama won a second term?

… and I would not be Surprised if they attempt to take his Life.
