CNN/Opinion Research survey: Perry Still Leads Nationally But Obama Continues to Beat Him & Romney
Edited on Mon Sep-26-11 02:04 PM by ClarkUSA
Despite shaky recent debate performances, a new CNN/Opinion Research survey finds Rick Perry remains on top of the field in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

Perry leads with 30%, followed by Mitt Romney at 22%, Newt Gingrich at 11%, Herman Cain at 9%, Ron Paul at 7%, Michele Bachmann at 6%, Rick Santorum at 3% and Jon Huntsman at 1%.

However, the survey indicates that Romney fares best against President Obama, trailing by just one point, 49% to 48%. Obama holds a five point lead over Perry, 51% to 46%.

I wonder to what extent the Republican establishment and their corporate donors will go to destroy Perry. We already know Karl Rove and the Romney/Bush Republicans detest him.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Koch Bros. paid astroturf are working conservative websites to steer voters away from Perry and towards Romney as much as they are on liberal websites to influence opinion against Pres. Obama in order to depress Democratic turnout in 2012.

1. I have REALLY mixed feelings about this one.
The simple reality is - when the economy is perceived as doing poorly - incumbent presidents almost always become unpopular, support or at least enthusiasm from their base almost always decreases significantly and they almost always lose reelection. There have been exceptions. But they have been rare. Considering that it is unlikely that the economy is going to turn around that much in a positive way by October/November 2011 - simple political science and history therefore tells me that neither President Obama or any other Democratic nominee is likely to win in 2012. In other words most likely the Republican nominee will probably win. Of course there are no absolutes when it comes to history or politics. There have been exceptions to this pattern and 2012 may very well be an exception. Rick Perry offers the the best possible opportunity to break this pattern because of his extremist record and rhetoric. He is so far out of the mainstream even by rural American standards - its hard for me to imagine that he could win. On the other hand he is so extreme and so dangerous - I feel nervous about hoping for such a risk when I consider the stakes.

3. The economy is improving, no thanks to Republicans in Congress. Here's one example:

5. Polling done after Perry's bad debate by telephone--apparently land lines only.
The CNN poll was conducted by ORC International from September 23-25, with 1,010 adult Americans, including 447 Republicans and independents who lean towards the GOP questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

10. Obama's lack of showing a spine or standing up to the repubs are why many libs don't like Obama
i know that's a big part of it with me. also how he stocked his admin w/insiders. many of his policy decisions look more republican than democratic to me. Obama will have only himself to blame if liberals abandon him at the poles next year. would the words "single-payer" really have killed him to utter? he did NOTHING to investigate the WAR CRIMES of Bush/Cheney, nothing other than cover it up. i mean come on sure Obama is better than ALL the repubs, but he is a huge letdown in many, many, many, many, many ways. hope and change HA!

15. Glad you cited this. The notion that some vast majority of libs don't like Obama
is something that some corners of the Left are clinging to against data that consistently says he has about 75-80% Lib/Dem support.

16. Well then the Dems should just write off the other 28% - you know, the ones who pay attention
the ones who donated and campaigned for him last time. Obama may (does) have you fooled ClarkUSA - (or on the payroll more likely) but not everyone. I don't buy that BS poll and self-identifying "liberals" either.

19. Thought i should Chime in...
I am not the starter of this subthread but thought id just give my 2c. To assume that there are no liberals upset with Obama seems silly. There is no question that Obama's turnout will be smaller than it was in 2008 primarily because of less enthusiasm. Will it be the entire 28%? Nah..but if you are honest with yourself you will admit Obama has been primarily a center-right president. The economy sucks because he has been governing as a republican would and completely baffled by why things havent turned around. Sure Wall Street is doign well because that was his agenda. If he only listened to the many progressive plans that came out of Congress instead of tossing them into the toilet.

But hey as we can see Obama is currently in his Campaign Mode which is the ONLY time when Obama and democrats begin to act like Liberals again...or should i say "speak like liberals". So i welcome back Obama '08, we've missed you. But shame on me if i forget who he REALLY is.

If i vote for Obama in '12 it wont be because i like him..it will because he is the lesser of two evils. But i am not going to lie to you, if there was an alternative democrat i strongly would reconsider my vote. If it were Feingold or Elizabeth Warren i wouldn't even blink...these two are TRUE DEMOCRATS, not DINOS!

In my book that's way too close for comfort.

14. The polls are all over the place.
Newt comes in at 3rd place in one poll at ten percent. Cain wins straw poll in Florida. Romney wins in Michigan at 51 percent. The Republicans are a mess right now.
