Through Her Eyes: S. Ann Dunham’s Field Work in Indonesia
HONOLULU -- President Barack Obama's mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, is recognized for her work as an anthropologist in Indonesia.

An exhibit opened Sunday at the East-West center that features examples of the crafts and artwork she studied, as well as rarely seen photographs of Dunham.

The exhibit is titled "Through Her Eyes: Ann Dunham's Field Work In Indonesia."

"In the exhibition you'll see photographs of her, taken by other people working in the field with her, as well as her field work of different people laboring in various crafts," said curator Dr. Michael Schuster.

Through Her Eyes: S. Ann Dunham’s Field Work in Indonesia
Arts Exhibition
Where: East-West Center Gallery
When: Sep 25 2011 - 12:00pm - Jan 8 2012 - 4:00pm
What:

S. Ann Dunham (1942-1995), President Barack Obama’s mother, is recognized for her outstanding work in anthropology which focused on the small craft industries in village Indonesia. Much of her research was carried out while she was an EWC student fellow in the 1970s. Her devotion to social and economic development was evidenced by her pioneering work in the field of microfinance and gender equity. Her anthropological research helped shape policies set by the institutions she worked with in Asia, including the Ford Foundation, USAID, the Asian Development Bank, and BRI, the oldest bank in Indonesia.

This exhibition includes photographs taken during her years of field research in Indonesia as well as personal artifacts which include examples of metal smithing, jewelry, leather work, textiles, ceramics, and basketry made in the villages of Indonesia. Dunham’s personal art and artifact collection has been augmented by some recent purchases, in order to give wider context to her work in Indonesia.

1. I was looking at the photo for quite a while before I noticed that the woman on the right was
nursing a baby.

I love the pic of Stanley Ann - such an interesting woman. I read the biography that came out on her last year.

2. Barack really loved his mother. You might call him a mama's boy...
This is her final resting place (where Obama scattered her ashes):

"Lana'i point is on the southern shore of Oahu - so named because on a clear day it has a direct view of Lana'i (a small island south of Maui where it is believed the first Hawaiians arrived). It has been suggested it ought to be named Barack Obama Inspiration Point.

8. and I think it really helps to understand where Obama is coming from when he tells us to love ...
"She felt that somehow, wandering through uncharted territory, we might stumble upon something that will, in an instant, seem to represent who we are at the core. That was very much her philosophy of life — to not be limited by fear or narrow definitions, to not build walls around ourselves and to do our best to find kinship and beauty in unexpected places."
