Care to share in Lanny Davis' "magical moment" in honor of Clinton's legacy?

Bill Clinton’s legacy

By Lanny Davis

<...>

It was in that announcement speech that Clinton articulated that he intended to follow a different path than traditional Democratic Party liberal orthodoxy, appealing to the middle class, political moderates and independents. “The change we must make isn’t liberal or conservative,” he said. “It’s both, and it’s different … People don’t care about the idle rhetoric of ‘left’ and ‘right’ and ‘liberal’ and ‘conservative.’ ”

<...>

I remember being lucky to share a magical moment in the White House on a sunny morning in the East Room in June 2004. President and Mrs. Clinton had returned to the White House for the unveiling of the official presidential and first lady portraits. Then-President George W. Bush said some gracious words about Bill and Hillary Clinton, thanking them for “filling this house with joy and energy.”

Then Bill Clinton took the podium and thanked Bush for his “generous words to Hillary and me.”

Looking directly at President Bush, he continued: “The president, by his generous words to Hillary and me today, has proved once again that, in the end, we are held together by this grand system of ours that permits us to debate and struggle and fight for what we believe is right … And I hope that I’ll live long enough to see American politics return to vigorous debates where we argue who’s right and wrong, not who’s good and bad.”

The room filled with Clinton friends and supporters roared its approval with a standing ovation. President Bush stood and applauded too — pointing at President Clinton, a gesture of affirmation. Clinton pointed back. You could see a special bond occurring between the two at that moment that, I believe, continues to this day.

Ick!

On edit, what's Lanny smoking? Clinton's legacy isn't going to be defined by his relationship with Bush, but by his Presidency and the CGI. It's telling that at this point, with an election battle brewing, Lanny pulls out the "can't we all be friends" sentiment.

I don't need to be reminded how badly Clinton has always craved acceptance by the people who hated his guts.

Who is this POS?

17. He was pretty pathetic in the final days of the Hillary Clinton campaign.
I actually do PARTIALLY agree with Clinton that we need to get back to days where issues and legislation can be debated without the intense polarization that exists now. I am not naive, there have always been a segment on each end that has been completely unwilling to consider the ideas of anyone but themselves, but in the past it was not nearly the whole party - as it is with today's Republicans. What is stunning to me is that in the 60s and 70s, the John Birch Society, which the Koch brothers belong to was completely discredited.

In 1998, my Senator Bradley opted not to run again, saying that the level of civility in the Senate had fallen to such a level that he no longer wanted to be part of it. Now, those days look civil in comparison.

There are many things I fault Clinton for in 2004 - mainly his putting out his book in June 2004 - because what Democratic nominee would not want a month of pundits recounting that the Lewinsky problems started "because I could". (Ask yourself if that book would hhave been released then if Hillary were the likely nominee.) Then, to enhance his own reputation and emphasize his membership in the Presidents' club - he backed Bush on Iraq and called out those who questioned the conduct of the war. (Note this went beyond if we should have invaded, it meant that even questioning Abu Ghraib as both Kerry and Dean did calling for Rumsfeld to resign was wrong. Apparently though it was ok in 2005 or 2006 when Hillary called out Rumsfeld.) This however was a normal ceremonial event that always occurs a few years after a President leaves office. His comments are reasonable, though he gushes far too much of his friendship with Bush.

4. Other than aggravating some Democrats, what is your point?
They were all at the WH unveiling the Clintons' official portraits. What were they supposed to do, spit at each other?

Keep it up with the divisive posts. Next year some of us will just sit back, eat popcorn, and watch the fur fly.

There are only a handful of people who had the privilege to live in the WH. When their terms are over they tend to be gracious toward each other. It usually means nothing more than polite B.S.

:-(

18. It 'usually' does mean nothing more than polite BS...and then there are high profile booktours used
to not just show support for Bush, but, vigorously DEFEND Bush's military leadership and his decisions on Iraq at the exact same time Bush was being heavily criticized for those decisions by the Dem nominee.

Gee....why do you suppose Clinton did that back then?

19. You can
bet that if Lanny was calling out Obama (and don't be fooled, this piece is aimed at the President's tour calling out Republicans), he'd be hailed as a progressive hero (Carville). Where has Lanny been?
