President Obama’s Speech At The Human Rights Campaign Dinner (VIDEO)
Watch President Obama’s Speech At The Human Rights Campaign Dinner
by Frances Martel | 6:53 pm, October 1st, 2011

For the first time since 2009, President Barack Obama was the keynote speaker at tonight’s Human Rights Campaign national dinner in Washington, DC. He will be addressing the LGBT rights group on the movement and, unlike two years ago, he has one major achievement to show them under his belt: that he kept his promise to get rid of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell he made during his last keynote.

Addressing the civil rights organization, the President put on the table several issues of great importance to the HRC, a longtime advocate of same-sex marriage, equal employment rights for LGBT couples, the ability to serve in various military capacities and other significant points. Lauding the end of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the President, who has also stated previously that he has no intention of enforcing the Defense of Marriage Act, listed his goals for the improvement in conditions of LGBT Americans within the next stage of his tenure.

2. Shame that it took this - 44 presidents - to make such significant leaps toward GLBT equality...
Major strides, yes. Of course, still miles to go... We'll get there...provided we keep progress alive through next year's elections.

3. It was great. People should watch the entire thing. He nails the Republican Presidential candidates
for not standing up for the gay soldier during the debate. Paraphrase "You want to be Commander in Chief? Stand up when someone boos our soldiers. If you want to be Commander-in-Chief," he said you stand up for American military personnel "even when its not politically convenient."

5. Here's the quote
SNIP

President Obama: "We don't believe in the kind of smallness that says it's okay for a stage full of political leaders -- one of whom could end up being the president of the United States -- being silent when an American soldier is booed. We don't believe in that,"

"We don't believe in standing silent when that happens. We don't believe in them being silent since. You want to be commander in chief? You can start by standing up for the men and women who wear the uniform of the United States, even when it's not politically convenient. We don't believe in a small America. We believe in a big America -- a tolerant America, a just America, an equal America -- that values the service of every patriot."
