Yes, Perry frequented the camp, and the phrase on the sign – “removed” – is inexcusable

37%
No, Perry’s campaign says his father painted over the sign many years ago; plus, his family didn’t put it there in the first place

6%
I'm not sure

1. The sign should be taken down and burned.
Or melted, or whatever. Who cares who put it there?

10. Learned that later - it should be blown up or whatever
must be done to get rid of a rock or rock face. They can do it to build highways through mountains, so they can do it with this.

5. I'm with you--the second I saw it, in fact. Either that, or get out the jackhammer, and turn it
into gravel for the roadway.

There's just no justification for the lazyass attitude. It's stories like this that are so illustrative of a person's character.

Jeez, between Perry and his racist sign, and Mitt Romney and his cruelty to his dog, there's not much in the way of compassion amongst these conservatives, is there?

11. Yep, as soon as I bought the property.
Heck if I had the money I'd buy the property just to do that - and if the name is in any county records, go to court to get it changed.

6. I was told by a man from Kentucky that the word has nothing
to do with black folks. From dictionary.com:

Niggerhead
Nig"ger*head`\, n. A strong black chewing tobacco, usually in twisted plug form; negro head.

I think it's offensive because this definition doesn't make sense, but then again, neither does naming the place what they named it.

14. You should see the wide variety of products that used to have that name.
And the slightly less offensive "Negro Head" name...! Rapid Google perusal brings us this tip of an ugly iceberg:

21. Painful
As an African-American this is painful. I appreciate Madem showing the history here - sometimes it so easy to forget how horrifying it is until you see these images....I don't see how anyone can defend Perry. It's one thing if someone said it was in the family and it was there for years but by the 60/70's someone realized it was offensive and changed it. It's another for this to have been around during the 80's and 90's, someone said in a news piece that it was up as late as 2008.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Rick Perry, was asked during a GOP debate about Texas’ 234 executions during his nearly 11 years as governor. He said he “never struggled” with the issue because “the state of Texas has a very thoughtful, very clear process in place.” Assuming that the majority of those on death row are African American, this is deeply disturbing. I hope he goes down for this.

23. There's more crap (and that's putting it mildly) and some of it is even worse, if you can imagine.
It is simply indefensible.

It's kind of curious to me that the guy who had to lead the charge in protesting this for offended Republicans was candidate Cain, the black pizza magnate. He's the only Republican who has stood up and waved the bullshit flag. Otherwise, unless I am missing something, the silence from the GOP has been pretty deafening.

If this is not Perry's undoing, I will be ... flummoxed. This isn't an affair, or a youthful indiscretion, or a sleazy business deal he's trying to talk his way out of, this goes to the essential core of his character. Very distressing--someone with this kind of POV shouldn't be anywhere near national office. He should be scorned by anyone with a brain.

18. I agree with you. All of the labels on the products with that name have
stereotypical and subservient portrayals of black people on them. It's a power play thing--not nice at all.

9. The other shoe is going to drop. Perry did NOT paint it out in 1983.
Eye witnesses are coming forward to say that the offensive racist sign was there quite recently. Perry's claim that it was painted over in 1983 is contradicted by eye witnesses.

22. It was a headline discussion on THE VIEW. They totally bleeped the N-Word
and both Whoopi Goldberg and Barbara Walters used it repeatedly in the absolute context of the story. Sherry Shephard got angry/upset at Barbara using the word, and said it was OK for WG but not BW. Very odd exchange.

19. In other news, 37% of Americans are clueless, racist, or Republican apologists.
Or more likely, all three put together.
